Stones , stones and mores stones...

Yesterday, the building contractors had out their heavy equipment breaking the basalt stones that underlay this area to ready the ground for another House's foundation.  There is very little top soil here, and sold rock not very far down- less than a foot.  For each foundation they build, they get out this "battering ram like" tool to break the stones all day long ...

This process has been going on for eons of time...I can't even imagine what it was like building the ancient "marvels" of the world by hand....

In the Bible, stones were used for a variety of things
- building

-foundations
1 Kings 5:17
At the king’s command they removed from the quarry large blocks of high-grade stone to provide a foundation of dressed stone for the temple..

-Memorials
Joshua 4:7
tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”

Joshua 4:21
He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’

-weapons
1 Samuel 17:40
Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

-decorating clothing and buildings
1 Chronicles 29:8
Anyone who had precious stones gave them to the treasury of the temple of the Lord in the custody of Jehiel the Gershonite.

-destroying an enemies field, scattered stones on them
Ecclesiastes 3:5a
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,......

-trading
Ezekiel 27:22
“‘The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices and precious stones, and gold.

-illustration
Luke 6:48
They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
Luke 6:49
But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

In other words, they used stones just the way we do now...

During This last trip to Elko, we sorted and moved stones.....rocks....from Don's many years of collecting...we built really pretty and unique lizard houses along the fence of our office..as we dumped wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of rocks along the fence..
some were meticulously labeled with where they had come from...most others were unknown...some pretty, most others were not.  All were valuable for some reason or another to Don...he had interesting prospects and compelling prospects over the years...

He used them for various mining ideas, Boy Scout teaching tools, home school teaching tools, wood-stove back drops.....his livelihood...his passion for new theories, new mines,......reminders of places visited, places seen over the years...each had a story to tell....

We even used some at his gravesite, as a memorial, uniquely him....

We are like those stones...we build, we decorate, we are being built, we illustrate, we memorialize.

1 Peter 2:5
you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 33:6
He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.

2 Timothy 2:19
Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”

What kind of stones do I have in my life??? Do i have a sure foundation??
am I a living stone , offering the right sacrifices?
