Chickens in Hawaii.....

Chickens....

Banty Chickens are everywhere in Hawaii.  Running across the streets, along beaches, at the malls, wondering around the airport parking lots....at weddings....

Some are fearful and others are fearless....pecking away, gathering the multitude of bugs.  Roosters, hens, chicks,  all ages...running to and fro....you would think for as many loose chickens as there are, the bug populations would be low, but not so...there are everywhere, all kinds, big and little as well....

As a child, we grew had banty chickens...they are smaller than other regular chickens, but so colorful....hard to keep in pens,,as they tend to escape easily ...it seems like they made good mothers as they would hide their eggs, sit on them, until hatched and then run around with their cute little yellow fluffs of babies...

As food, not too meaty,....as egg layers, prolific....little eggs about the size you can make with your pointer finger and thumb.

"Why does Hawaii have so many chickens?
Wikipedia suggests a possible theory: “Others say that sugarcane plantation laborers in the late 1800s and early 1900s brought and raised chickens (for eating and cockfighting) and many got loose over the years and multiplied.”"
In fact, when we visited a sugarcane museum, one of the displays was of cock fighting...

I would suspect that every tourist has  at least one picture of a wild chicken.....

In the Bible, there are only a few references to fowl....one being a listing of food supplies, the others refer to getting free of the fowler's snare...it would take a pretty good snare to catch the Hawaiian chicken, they are pretty quick...and the last reference  refers to the comfort and protection that God longs to offer with His protection....

But a fowler's snare, Satan's schemes......we don't want to be caught by his schemes or become entangled by things that take us away from God...

As a parent, the picture presented in Matthew of protection, is so real....the hen gathering her offspring under her wings...so that they are all hidden, protected...cared for...

I love how the Bible so graphically portrays so many life situations ....protection, snares....simply bringing us into the stories with life lessons...we don't want to be snared,  we want that protection....simply said...hard to live, sometimes....

Thank YOU that Your word speaks to us simply...but with life sustaining lessons of faith, protection, care...love...You so desire that we get the lessons with our simple and complex minds ....You desire that none should perish...and you continue to draw us to Yourself...

Psalm 91:3
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.

Proverbs 6:5
Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the snare of the fowler.

Matthew 23:37
“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.
