Psalm 136….His steadfast love endures forever….

 Psalm 136….His steadfast love endures forever…


When I started reading this psalm, my mind kept singing this song by Michael W. Smith, “forever”…

Both have repetitive words…”sing praise”….”his steadfast love endures forever”….”forever”…


They ring over and over in our minds…making their point loud and clear…catchy…giving reason after reason of the “why”….


There is a phrase, “one more trip around Mt Sinai “…meaning that if we don’t learn a lesson on the first pass, we get around again…maybe the same lesson, or maybe in a deeper sense…repetition teaches…just as this psalm does…37 times in the Psalms alone…we don’t or may not have the same list to give thanks for…but we do have something…

Names, we all have them…nicknames, legal names, bad names, good names…those serious times when mom says our whole name to get our attention or when we know that we are in trouble…


We can change our names legally or not…but we can depend on God to keep his…

What song/songs comes to mind as classic? Ones that reach to your soul…The Hallelujah Chorus, Great if thy Faithfulness, How form a Foundation, Rock of Ages, …the list goes on…plus all the  wonderful more modern praise songs…


These psalms may have been sung by priests at a particular time, or by others at another time…all are titled, “A Song of Ascents”…with different subtitles…

Psalm 119…firsts…

2. Fill in the supporting details…

3. Write a concluding sentence…”, wikihow


This was how we were taught to write…long long ago in a far away place…how I despised the rewrites…the report writing, the sentence structure…the diagrams…I actually had to take remedial English is college along with many others…I learned more in one semester than 4 years of  high school or maybe I was more motivated…


Anyway, yesterday I just added the end verses of each 8 verse segments of Psalm 119…

Today, it is the first verses…”the topic sentences”…how the author praises, questions, declares, pleads…


The in-between verses are just as important…but I loved how he started each segment…and builds on them…

The love we cling to, the walk we walk, the Word made manifest, the promises God gives, the deliverance he claims…we can speak to God as the author did so long…as God hasn’t left …He is as present now as He was then…

Matthew Henry’s commentary about Psalm 119, waxes eloquence about this long Psalm, the longest one…keying in on the meanings, the poetry, the descriptions, the Word spoken in 8 verse segments…


For whatever reason, I am just focusing on the last verse of those 8 verse segments…it just looked interesting… not that the whole is not…

Each exalts the Word, just as the whole psalm does, deals with how we personally view the Word, God…personally in heart felt meditation, God’s Love, his counsel, his righteousness …


 I will keep your statutes;do not utterly forsake me! 

I will delight in your statutes;I will not forget your word. 

Your testimonies are my delight;they are my counselors. 

I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!

Psalm 118 comes between the shortest chapter and the longest chapter…117 with 2 verses and 119 with 176 verses… (just an odd thought)…

But fitting for today, Thanksgiving, it starts with and ends with, “oh give thanks to the Lord….”


Why?

For he is good…

His steadfast love endures forever…

He answers…

He sets free…

He is on my side…

He is my helper…

He is my refuge…

He is trustworthy…

He is my helper…

He is my strength…

He is my song…

He is my salvation…

He is the cornerstone…

He makes the days…

He makes his light to shine upon us…

Psalm 115…idols..

 Psalm 115…idols…


Several years ago, my husband and I travelled with a tour group…we visited site after site of history…walking paths where thousands had gone before…temples, gardens, homes,  diggings, historical sites….places venerated by millions…

Idols at every turn…offerings of food, lighted candles, incense, etc…

It was interesting, but soooo oppressive to my spirit…I felt like there was a darkness that lingered over the hand carved golden statues…the smells of the various places were not pleasant to my breathing…

It was an eye opening experience…

I tend to think that idols are found “somewhere” else…but, no, they surround us in any nation…they may not be enshrined in magnificent temples or tour destinations, but they exist nevertheless…

Something that we venerate over the  Creator God…

broadly : a false god

: a likeness of something

obsolete : PRETENDER

: a false conception :

: a form or appearance visible but without substance”

Psalm 113…childless woman…

 Psalm 113…childless woman…


 Praise the Lord.Praise the Lord, you his servants;praise the name of the Lord. 

Let the name of the Lord be praised,both now and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,the name of the Lord is to be praised. 

The Lord is exalted over all the nations,his glory above the heavens. 

Who is like the Lord our God,the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to lookon the heavens and the earth? 

He raises the poor from the dustand lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes,with the princes of his people. He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

I remember reading this psalm over 50 years ago…my focus at the time was the “childless woman” …or in my version at the time…”He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children”.
It is marked in my old worn, rebound Bible…which I had to retire before it fell apart anymore…given to me on my 16th birthday by on of my grandmothers…


While I realized that the psalm is one of praise of the Lord…I was hurting…after multiple miscarriages, I wanted to be a mom…we were actually looking into adopting…but along came our first son… 

then a daughter …another daughter and then another son…over an 11 year period…as well a a few foster babies along the way….happy, joyous…mother of children…and now 12 grandchildren…and I so love them all….


There were some rough times, yes, but they were covered with many , many wonderful times and still are…I am so grateful that God saw fit  to make me a mother, He settled me into a home…with family…

Psalm 112…trust…

 Psalm 112…trust…


Eleven years ago my husband had his last earthly Thanksgiving…we had a lot of very important “lasts” that winter…we recorded them in pictures…we all looked tired…a bit worn…but there were smiles none the less…Cancer had raised its ugly head in our family again…this time with the word “terminal “ attached…something we never contemplated, never faced before…


A friend gave us this framed  saying….author unknown…

“ cancer is so limited

It cannot cripple love,

It cannot shatter hope,

It cannot corrode faith,

It cannot eat way peace,

It cannot destroy confidence,

It cannot kill friendship,

It cannot shut out memories,

It cannot silence courage,

It cannot invade the soul,

It cannot reduce eternal life,

It cannot quench the Spirit,

It cannot lessen the power of the Resurrection….”

As I read Psalm 112, I thought of those days… especially verses 6-9…

“Surely the righteous will never be shaken;they will be remembered forever. 

They will have no fear of bad news;their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 

Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. 

They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,their righteousness endures forever;their horn will be lifted high in honor.”

Ps.112.6-9


My husband’s gifting was giving and he left our family with a legacy to continue that giving…but, he trusted as well…in all those “lasts”…we spent valuable time hearing stories, remembering, laughing with family and friends…holding on tightly to each precious minute…learning trust at a deeper level than ever before…day by day as the time ticked away…

As I read and thought about psalm 109, two pictures kept coming to mind.


1. Jesus and his accusers before the cross…

David speaks…

“Be not silent, O God of my praise! 

For wicked and deceitful mouths are opened against me,speaking against me with lying tongues. 

They encircle me with words of hate,and attack me without cause. 

In return for my love they accuse me,but I give myself to prayer. 

So they reward me evil for good, and hatred for my love.”

Ps.109.1-5


Jesus came because of his great love…and yet there were those who hated him…


David speaks..

“Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good.”

Ps.38.20


Remembering the movie, “The Passion”…the scenes of the soldiers, like vultures, hyenas going In for the kill…circling around Jesus with accusations…

“And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” 

And they cast lots to divide his garments. 

And the people stood by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 

The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine”

Luke.23.34-36


2.The other picture was that of the stoning of Stephen…


 “And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 

Then they secretly instigated men who said, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 

And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council, and they set up false witnesses who said, “This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the law, for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.” 

And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

Others who were and are  falsely accused…could have written the same words as David…he wanted help, rescue, even vengeance…

But, he knows that God would deal with those around him…

He is the Rescuer…

Reading the psalm, 108, immediately brought to mind this song…

We don’t hear it often anymore, but, it was a wonderful praise song in the past…basically it follows Pslam  108…

But, Psalm 108 combines Psalms 57 and 60…written by David…


Why, the repeat…not sure…did he just need to repeat the words that were in his heart again? Did he wake up with those words running through his mind…and say…”I just need to write them again”…


If this verse in 2 Timothy is true, which it is…”All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2Tim.3.16-17

Then, there is no mistake that the words in Psalm 108 are repeated…I needed to read it twice, meditate on it, have it flow deep into my heart and soul…God is worthy of being Exalted….over and over again….He is worthy of praise…


“With God we shall do valiantly;it is he who will tread down our foes.” Vs 13

Tug of war….Psalms 106, 107…

 Tug a war….Psalms 106, 107…


Maybe some don’t have this problem…a tug a war of emotions, allegiance, thoughts, will…going from what is wrong to what is right….back and forth…wanting my way versus what is God’s way…slow to fast and back again…balance to unbalanced…


That’s what the 106 and 107 Psalms feel like to me…


106 starts and ends with “Praise the Lord”, but relates how the Israelites go from following His way to their way and back again…over and over…a litany of “they did this or that” , or “then they”, forgetting God, not following His directions…while “many times he delivered them” from their bad decisions…


Coming back to…


 Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,when he heard their cry. 

For their sake he remembered his covenant,and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,from everlasting to everlasting!

And let all the people say, “Amen!”Praise the Lord!

Oh, how fickle we are…

107, follows a similar pattern…but starts with…


 Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So! 

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,for his steadfast love endures forever! 

Let the redeemed of the Lord say so,whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands,from the east and from the west,from the north and from the south. 

Some wandered in desert wastes,finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty,their soul fainted within them. 

Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. 

Psalm 107:1-7


Repeating this phrase.. over and over…

Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,for his wondrous works to the children of man! 

For he satisfies the longing soul,and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

Ending with…


 Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord.

Listen, attend, consider…meditate, contemplate…and then what will you do with them….


Whom do we choose? Whom do we rely upon? Who shows his steadfast love? Who redeems? Whom do we praise? Who or what holds our hearts?

Psalm 105’s subtitle is “Tell of His wondrous Works” …and starts with …

“Oh give thanks to the Lord; 

call upon his name;make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him;tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name;let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! 

Seek the Lord and his strength;seek his presence continually! Remember the wondrous works that he has done,his miracles, and the judgments he uttered, O offspring of Abraham, his servant,children of Jacob, his chosen ones!”

Ps.105.1-6

Speaking to the Israelites…and then goes into the saving of Israel from Abraham through Moses…a simplified history…a listing of all that the Lord had done for this nation over the years ending in the promised land..a land that was prepared for them, not by their own hands….

Ending with…” Praise the LORD!”…


There are times when we can look back, after the fact…and see God’s saving grace in our lives…those moments…saying . “Wow, God really worked that out….or, if that had not happened, then… or

a multitude of events working for us” even through the hard times…we can see Him working  on our behalf and  we won’t see the true picture of His hand on our lives until we, too, get to the “promised land” which He is, even now, preparing for this who believe… not prepared with humans hands as the promised land of old, but by the very Creator who fashioned the world with care…


 In My Father’s house are many dwelling places. If it were not so, I would have told you, because I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and I will take you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also. 

John.14.2-3


I love that word, “continually “….not only from man’s side but God’s…

 Creation amplified…Psalm 104


Finishing a project is always fun, whether a report, a quilt, a song, a painting or launching a teen successfully…or holding that new born baby…we stand back satisfied…knowing there is still work ahead…but finishing something well warms the soul and mind…

Now we take a multitude of pictures showing  that piece of time, recording the finished work…

 I thought of that, while reading Psalm 104…it gives a more visual word example of creation…and the God of the Universe who did the work with his Word…how he put everything into its place and saw that it was good…

While Psalm 104 doesn’t follow Genesis 1 exactly, it reads like a poetic version…amplifying the words spoken…adding more descriptions…all the while giving credence to creation by a Great God who saw his work and was pleased and saw that each facet was good…


 He set the earth on its foundations,so that it should never be moved. 

You covered it with the deep as with a garment;the waters stood above the mountains. 

At your rebuke they fled;at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. 

The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. 

You set a boundary that they may not pass,so that they might not again cover the earth. 

You make springs gush forth in the valleys;they flow between the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field;the wild donkeys quench their thirst. 

Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell;they sing among the branches. 

From your lofty abode you water the mountains;the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

 Bless and because….Psalm 103….


This is a beautiful psalm of David…he starts and ends with “bless the LORD” …and all the “becauses” in between…and there are more than 20 of them…

I sat and numbered the “becauses” in the Bible margins just to help me stop and meditate on them…Much to “ Bless the the LORD”….

From man, to angels, to ministers, to hosts, all who do his will, to His works…ALL to Bless the LORD….


 Bless the Lord, O my soul,and all that is within me,bless his holy name! 

Bless the Lord, O my soul,and forget not all his benefits, 

who forgives all your iniquity,

who heals all your diseases, 

who redeems your life from the pit,

who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 

who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

Time and time again…

 Time and time again….Psalm 102


Psalm 102 is subtitled, “ a prayer of one afflicted, when he is faint and pours out his complaint before the Lord”…


Many of us have done the same, especially if you got this Covid in the last couple of years, or any other of the ailments which are rampant any more …we lie in bed, covers rumpled, tissues at hand, …staring at the ceiling or curled tightly, sleeping at odd hours, shaking with fever or chills…ugh…no fun…wondering where God is or simply talking to Him in the darkness or morning light…or listening quietly…


But,  what struck me as I read this through again was the many references to “time”….

Day…

Days…

All the day…

Evening shadow…

Forever…

Generations…

Appointed time…

Yet to be created…

Shortened my days…

Midst of my days..

Years…

Of old…

Pass away…

Years have no end…


The comparison of man’s finite time, shortness of time and God’s infinite time…His foreverness…we have a Constant in our lives if we but hold on to Him…and He never lets us go…


We are a vapor here on earth on the time line of eternity…He holds it all together…

 But you, O Lord, are enthroned forever;you are remembered throughout all generations. 

Let this be recorded for a generation to come,so that a people yet to be created may praise the Lord:

Psalm 101…my dad…

 Psalm 101….my dad…


When I read this psalm, I thought of my dad…and tomorrow being Veterans Day…


My dad did not serve in the military, oh he tried, but was turned away for a heart murmur…and lived well into his eighties…

He would regale us with is unsuccessful try to enlist with a bunch of his buddies…


They graduated, a bunch of young men, who lived rurally, hardworking, fun loving, untraveled, innocent…catching a train from their farm homes to the big city of San Francisco…renting a hotel room, couldn’t find the bed, until they discovered it was “hidden” in the wall, finally dismantling it, they chose who actually got to sleep in it…going to the recruiting place to sign up, some accepted, others rejected…then adventuring around the town until they returned home to live their lives…


He would tell the tale, laughing  until he cried, going on to another story…we listened, laughing with  him until our cheeks ached…


He was a gentleman, tender, long suffering, patient and kind, “walked with integrity “…God-loving…a planner, friendly…loved my mother through 60 plus years…loved me, my husband, our children and theirs until he passed away…


He may not have served in the military like he would have liked, but he served well in the places he was called into…therein 

lies the secret for us all…


Thank YOU for giving me the dad You did…


 I will sing of steadfast love and justice;to you, O Lord, I will make music. 

I will ponder the way that is blameless.

Oh when will you come to me?

I will walk with integrity of heartwithin my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless.

I hate the work of those who fall away;it shall not cling to me. 

A perverse heart shall be far from me;I will know nothing of evil. Whoever slanders his neighbor secretly I  will destroy.

Psalm 100….

 Psalm 100….


 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!     

Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing! 

Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his;we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

When I read Psalm 100…what a joyous picture it makes… it reminds me of Jesus triumphal entry… or David’s welcoming the Ark…or God’s word written on the doorpost and gates…

Or the picture we all think of walking into heaven…with songs of praise…

Even Jesus carrying the cross…was triumphant…he was headed to victory…

Another tumultuous Election Day is here…

It seems each time we have an election, they are getting more and more divided…

What happened to the reasonable people…people of kindness, respect, care…that question sounds like Elijah in the Old Testament…


Our part is remember whomever is elected, no matter what happens…the LORD reigns supreme…


 The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble!

He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! 

The Lord is great in Zion;he is exalted over all the peoples. 

Let them praise your great and awesome name!Holy is he! 

The King in his might loves justice.You have established equity;you have executed justiceand righteousness in Jacob. 

Exalt the Lord our God;worship at his footstool!

Holy is he! 

Moses and Aaron were among his priests,Samuel also was among those who called upon his name.

Yesterday I chose to stay at home rather than attend our church services…head cold…


Our church has a livesteam which is soooo great when you can’t attend…I appreciate that they add the whole service with the announcements, the music as well as the sermon… 

And as much as I enjoy the sermons, my soul is refreshed with the music added to the Word expounded upon…

It’s like taking a sugar-coated pill, the music adds the sweetness, the pill makes you better…


So reading Psalm 98, it starts out with singing..

“Make a joyful noise” is found 6 times in the book of Psalms…

“Sing” is found 61 times…


“A psalm is a sing or poem used in worship…”

God must enjoy music and gave that appreciation to man…we have many references like…”the mountains shall clap their hands”, 

There were song writers, men who blew the trumpets, Shofar, played various instruments…plus songs …We will be singing in heaven, according to the book of Revelation…

 When I listen to the rustling of leaves in the trees, the gurgling of water in a stream, the waves at the beach, the songs of birds…all are songs…praise…

Lightning and melted earth…

 Melted earth and lightning….


Several years ago, our family set out to cross the U.S. with our travel trailer and a tent…we dropped down through Utah and Colorado, going through 4 corners, Gallup, New Mexico and then across …stopping frequently to see the sights of our vast nation…we only had two deadlines to meet- a TMI  bus in Atlanta, Georgia, as well a the commissioning service two weeks later in Merritt Island, Florida…


We made so many memories, saw so much…but one night stood out above all…Lubbock, Texas…this place is as flat as can be and you can see for miles around…we arrived, set up camp quickly as we could see a storm brewing …then the heavens let loose…a spectacular thunder and lightning storm in all directions….it was like watching the best fireworks show possible…with oohs and awes all around the camping area…as set out in our chairs and on top of the vehicles…what a memory of God’s power…


Melted earth…some commentaries suggested lava flows, others suggest landslides…we have seen both over and over again over the years. Rain soaked mud slides filling and spilling over towns and valleys, decimating communities…or lava flowing down the mountain side, burning everything in its path…


Neither the lightning nor the melted earth could be restrained by human hands…the Lord reigns…

Songs…

 Songs…



I copied the 2022 Dove awards to watch when I wanted to…so I have been watching a bit for several evenings…not all to my preferred style of music, but so grateful that so many people can come together, worshipping the same God with music of a variety of styles…


At one of the conferences I went to this last month Phil Wickham was featured. A contemporary Christian music writer, he led the group of people in singing and worship…he was one of the award receivers…Song writer of the Year…a gifted young man along with so many others…using his gift to serve…


Then reading todays  psalm…96…sing, sing, sing…these people in the Dove awards were doing just that, declaring His glory among the nations…giving us new songs  of praise…


Thank YOU….help us to praise You with songs, ancient and new…


 Oh sing to the Lord a new song;sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name;tell of his salvation from day to day.

I saved the best until the last…


But, first Eutychus…a young to whom many can relate…falling asleep during a sermon…

One of my friends  in high school was watching a movie during one of his classes…fell asleep, and as his head slipped off of his hand, his head hit the “ projector “ and moved the whole movie off the screen…rude awakening…woke up the whole class…

For Eutychus, he was sitting in the open window, air filled with the smoky lamp oil fumes, a long-winded orator, late at night… a prescription for falling asleep…falls three stories to the hard cobblestones below…lives to tell his tale…as well as the other listeners that night could tell their tale of the young life was saved…


Eutychus…

 On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, “Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.” And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted.

Drum roll….


Jesus….

Which brings us to Jesus….this young man we follow from birth to death and beyond…He came to change the world, not be changed by circumstances…He came with a plan that was spoken of in Genesis…He came with a purpose that involves all of mankind…He was prophesied about for thousands of years…He was there at the beginning…


 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Rev.1.8


 For to us a child is born,to us a son is given;and the government shall be upon his shoulder,and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end,on the throne of David and over his kingdom,to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

Isa.9.6-7

He came that we might change, be transformed…that we could have a Savior, a Redeemer…have eternal life…


 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

John.3.16-17


And finally…a change imperishable….because of Jesus…


 Behold! I tell you a mystery. 

We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. 

For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 

For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written:

“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory?O death, where is your sting?” 

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Asking for wisdom….


Solomon… one of the sons of King David…began his rule in his early twenties.  He had been promised the kingship, had watched his father, David then to king…he reigned for 40 years…built the Temple.  He wrote Proverbs, Song of Solomon and Ecclesiastes…

He was prepared for kingship, but preparation to actuality is huge…change…


David admonished Solomon…

 When David's time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying, “I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn, that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

1Kgs.2.1-4


Solomon sought wisdom from the Lord…

 Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. 

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” 

And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. 

And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. 

And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. 

And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. 

Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” 

It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. 

Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. 

I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. 

And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.”

At any age we, too can ask for wisdom…

 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.”

Jas.1.5


Ruth…a Moabite, widowed, leaving her home country …asked to go with her mother in law…she was diligent, caring, hard working…a non-Israelite, she became part of the lineage of King David and is listed in the genealogy of Jesus…

She sought counsel from Naomi, her widowed mother in law…

So many changes as a young woman…widowhood, traveling, eeking out food as a gleaner to finally remarrying into wealth with Boaz…change…


 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more. 

The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!” So she kept close to the young women of Boaz, gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests. 

And she lived with her mother-in-law. 

He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.” 

Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse. And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. 

Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

Change 4…continued 4

 Change 4…continued 4….

A thoughtful mom send her son with a bit of lunch…barley loaves and fish…knowing as a growing boy, he will need some food at some point in the day…he is thoughtful as well…he shyly or boldly offers to share his lunch …..thinking at least I can share with someone…but, Jesus…blesses it and feeds five thousand with leftovers…the boy’s eyes grow rounder and rounder as he watches the multitude of baskets filled with loaves and fish appearing, being handed out to so many…afterwards he runs home to tell his mom….”mom, mom, you will never guess what happened when Jesus took my lunch….He fed five thousand and had leftovers…look here is my lunch, multiplied”…she hugs him, but he never forgets that multiplied lunch, that Jesus …who gave so much…


Boy with bread and fish…

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simons brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” 

Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number. 

Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 

So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”

Children who surrounded Jesus…a Master’s touch…

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people, but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And he laid his hands on them and went away.

Matt.19.13-15

I have often wondered what those children felt…when Jesus, the

Word, the Creator…when his hand was upon their little heads…did they remember it later as the Man who touched me…did their mothers remember to tell them later in life…about Jesus…did they become followers? Only heaven will tell…

At one of the mission conferences I attended, one missionary made the statement, “ 65 % of missionaries on the field in full time  service now,  went on a short term mission trip as a teen…” 


That statement has stayed with me over the years…my children did short term mission trips or worked in camps in various capacities as teens, now some of my older grandkids are doing the same…


Life changing…


Some more life changes in young people in the Bible ….


Shunammite woman’s son…a promise given, taken, restored…

But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her. 

When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. So he went in and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the Lord. Then he went up and lay on the child, putting his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands. And as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. Then he got up again and walked once back and forth in the house, and went up and stretched himself upon him. The child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. Then he summoned Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite..So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground. Then she picked up her son and went out.

Just imagine what this boy could tell his peers and all around him….


Jairus’ daughter…faith of a  desperate Jewish father…

And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.As Jesus went, the people pressed around him. While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Another child with a big story…


Timothy and Titus …admonished young men..Timothy discipled and travelled with Paul…called his son…

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

2Tim.2.22

Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.

 Titus.2.6


Samuel….”speak, for your servant hears”

But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.” 

Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” 

So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 

And the child was young. Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 

And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 

Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”And he worshiped the Lord there. 

Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man. 

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli. And the word of the Lord was rare in those days; there was no frequent vision. 

At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his own place. 

The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 

Then the Lord called Samuel, and he said, “Here I am!” and ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” 

But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 

And the Lord called again, “Samuel!” and Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” 

But he said, “I did not call, my son; lie down again.” 

Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. 

And the Lord called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” 

Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down, and if he calls you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant hears.’” 

So Samuel went and lay down in his place. And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.” Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 

And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fall to the ground. 

And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established as a prophet of the Lord. And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord.

Reading through these passages of young people has been a blessing…their human responses…God’s answers, care…change…


Jeremiah…a young man…called to be a prophet…”I am with you”

Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,and before you were born I consecrated you;

I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 

Then I said, “Ah, Lord God! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth.” 

But the Lord said to me,“Do not say, ‘I am only a youth’;for to all to whom I send you, you shall go,and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 

Do not be afraid of them,for I am with you to deliver you,declares the Lord.” 

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth. 

And the Lord said to me,“Behold, I have put my words in your mouth. 

See, I have set you this day over nations and over kingdoms,to pluck up and to break down,to destroy and to overthrow,to build and to plant.”

Mary…a young woman betrothed…a major shift in her life…fear turns to obedience…

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. 

And the virgin's name was Mary. 

And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 

But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 

And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 

And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Esther…faithful, courageous…


 Then the king's young men who attended him said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought out for the king.

And let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom to gather all the beautiful young virgins to the harem in Susa the citadel, under custody of Hegai, the king's eunuch, who is in charge of the women. 

Let their cosmetics be given them. 

And let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” 

This pleased the king, and he did so. 

He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, the daughter of his uncle, for she had neither father nor mother. 

The young woman had a beautiful figure and was lovely to look at, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. 

So when the king's order and his edict were proclaimed, and when many young women were gathered in Susa the citadel in custody of Hegai, Esther also was taken into the king's palace and put in custody of Hegai, who had charge of the women. 

And the young woman pleased him and won his favor. 

And he quickly provided her with her cosmetics and her portion of food, and with seven chosen young women from the king's palace, and advanced her and her young women to the best place in the harem. 

Esther had not made known her people or kindred, for Mordecai had commanded her not to make it known. 

And every day Mordecai walked in front of the court of the harem to learn how Esther was and what was happening to her. 

the king loved Esther more than all the women, and she won grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins, so that he set the royal crown on her head and made her queen instead of Vashti. 

Then the king gave a great feast for all his officials and servants; it was Esther's feast. 

He also granted a remission of taxes to the provinces and gave gifts with royal generosity. 

For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. 

And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” 

Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai, “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. 

I and my young women will also fast as you do.

Naaman’s  slave…faith of a child…leading her Master to the God who heals…

Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master and in high favor, because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. 

He was a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper. 

Now the Syrians on one of their raids had carried off a little girl from the land of Israel, and she worked in the service of Naaman's wife. 

She said to her mistress, “Would that my lord were with the prophet who is in Samaria! 

He would cure him of his leprosy.” 

So Naaman went in and told his lord, “Thus and so spoke the girl from the land of Israel.” 

And the king of Syria said, “Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel.”

So he went, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold, and ten changes of clothing.

 So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean. 

Then he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and he came and stood before him. 

And he said, “Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth but in Israel; so accept now a present from your servant.” 

Then Naaman said, “If not, please let there be given to your servant two mule loads of earth, for from now on your servant will not offer burnt offering or sacrifice to any god but the Lord. 

In this matter may the Lord pardon your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, leaning on my arm, and I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, when I bow myself in the house of Rimmon, the Lord pardon your servant in this matter.” He said to him, “Go in peace.”2Kgs.5.14,2Kgs.5.15,2Kgs.5.17-19a
