Donkey days…

 Donkey days…

One of my daughters and her husband volunteer at a donkey

Sanctuary…they take in abused, sick, aged donkeys…giving them a home, care, nurturing…Friday night was my daughter’s turn to feed them…each getting the type of food they need, not just hay thrown over the fence…

Saturday we went and groomed the donkeys, talking to them, brushing, while stalls were cleaned, water and food brought in by other crew members…

Each donkey has a story…some pretty bad…of neglect, abuse, injuries…one was beaten so badly around the mouth that it has to be hand fed soft food and water because of nerve damage…another has bad teeth because the owner only let it feed off of stumps in a field…while another broke its leg and walks almost on the bone…

They come in a variety of colors, browns, black, tans, even a pink shaded one…

And they all want attention, sidling up to be brushed, scratched, talked to, but when the gates are opened to the  upper fields, they are off for “greener pastures “…brushes, area cleaned up and we headed home…

It was a fun, relaxing, learning time…I learn so much from all my children and grandchildren…their likes, their hopes, their interests…

Donkeys are spoken of 140+ times in Scriptures…

They are listed among other things as part of a man’s riches…used to carry people and goods…one even saw the angel of the Lord and talked to its longtime master…the jawbone of one was used in warfare…

Pictures depicting  Joseph and Mary traveling to Bethlehem include a donkey…and the stable where Jesus was born could have housed a donkey as well…

The donkey was a star player in the Triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem near the end of His life…fulfilling prophecy…

“saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion,‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’”

The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.

They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.”

Matt.21.2-7

Tales of donkeys…the dorsal  cross on their backs…

“In one story, a donkey carried Jesus to Jerusalem and then, as Jesus carried his own cross, the donkey asked if it could help him carry it.

The donkey was turned away and, after waiting throughout the crucifixion, when the donkey turned to leave, it had the shadow of the cross on its back.

Another story tells a similar story, but instead of the shadow of the cross falling onto the donkey, Jesus actually tells God about how generous the donkey had been.

God blessed the donkey’s chief and placed his cross on the backs of all donkeys so the world will know they are holy.”from Horsey Tails…

My takeaway for day was…relax, take time to “smell the flowers, brush a donkey “…be content…observe…listen and be still…care and touch can be healing…

Thank YOU….

“Be still, and know that I am God.I will be exalted among the nations,I will be exalted in the earth!”

Ps.46.10

And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.

Mark.6.56
