What, no student driver’s lessons ?

 What, no student driver’s lessons?

When my mom was regaining her strength after her stroke, we finally got to the point that she was ready for an outing. One of the first places she wanted to go, Costco…we had tried the smaller stores for a brief visit, leaning on the cart for support. Now she was ready for the “big time”…

Her idea was to use the little electric cars they have for the physically challenged…the only trouble was, neither of us had a clue how to use them…and that was the trouble all through the excursion…fortunately there were few people at the time, the people who were there were very tolerant, and we could laugh at ourselves…nothing got severely damaged, fortunately….no one got purposely run over, we didn’t have to call any ambulances and we finally finished…we laughed so hard during this trip, that it broke the tension of months of working diligently to get better…my mom was able to carry on and I went home, relieved that we had brought her out of a second  sickness scare…

I did question the young man,who was caring for the carts,if they had “student driver” signs to stick on the carts…we should have had one, but then again, those around us probably guessed that…

Being here in rehab, I am back forth using both the walker and a wheelchair…I could use a student driver with my wheelchair…there are lots of little tricks that come with the vehicle…the main safeguard is is be sure and remember is to set your brakes when getting in and out…otherwise you may yourself with added injuries quickly…

The electric cart, the wheelchair and walkers are tools to

help us get around, to heal, to simplify life…we may use them for life or short periods of time…but such a help no matter what…

It makes me think of the people that Jesus and others healed of their infirmities…”take up your bed and walk”…times when our simple tools weren’t available…they waited to be carried, or begged along the way…

Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town.

Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat.

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”

So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” Then the man got up and went home.

When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

There are still places like that now, where simple wheelchairs are not available…

Joni and Friends have that ministry of helping those who are in need…
