Yesterday, i wondered around a local gravesite with a group of uniformed BoyScouts as they placed flags on grave sites of former military men and women ...those who had served in World Wars 1 and 2, Korea, Vietnam and wars since then... At each spot, the scouts cleaned off the stone, placed a flag and then saluted that site. This group of scouts did 60 plus sites. There were other groups, as well, each covering different sections of the graveyard..so when finished, the graveyard was a sea of flowing flags, fluttering in the breeze, mixed with colorful flowers on many grave sites. So fitting on a sunny day...servants remembered...
There were also military personnel dressed in their uniforms wondering around talking to the scout groups, encouraging them in their endeavors, showing their medals, various parts of their uniforms, ...servants of our land who served with honors.....giving of their time and talents to give us our freedoms as these men and women that were honored had done whom were honored with flags..
I like to read the stones...some have simple sayings, others elaborate carvings, and still others just names and dates...
One set, a husband and wife, said simply, "loved Jesus" while the other said, "served Jesus" with their names and dates...that said it all...servants of the Most High...no ranking, no elaboration...here...but much waiting in heaven for them..
This mother in Matthew 20 wanted honors for her sons. She missed the ultimate picture for their lives...Jesus wanted servants and they wanted to serve Him, not for man's approval but God's...they would pay the ultimate price for their service in the Lord's army on the earthly battleground for men's souls...our remembrance of them-reading their names in the Bible, worldwide ...and hearing of places they touched and went with the gospel so long ago...
Thank YOU for committed men and women who have served our country...but thank You so much for those servants who willing served You through the centuries carrying Your banner of Love to the nations of the world...
“What is it you want?” he asked. She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”
“You don’t know what you are asking,”
Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”
"We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”
When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.
Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Psalm 20:5a May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God......
