Presevering on....

Persevering  on...

After finishing the book, the Three Year Swim Club, (which in itself is a challenge), I was reminded of this verse---

Philippians 3:13-14 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

This coach and his students had years of perseverance to their goal of reaching the Olympics, through rules, wars, dictators, finances, transportation, swimming conditions, family conditions ....but they fought,moving forward, keeping their eye on the goal of swimming sometime for the US team...and they made, finally...several years later, but they made it...from the sugar irrigation ditches of Maui to the regulation pools of the Olympics in the late 1940's...from a rag tag bunch of "playing in the water" to honed, muscled swimmers...what a goal...what an acccomplishment...they practiced hours, days, weeks, months, years to reach their goals...

As a follower of Christ, am I practicing, persevering those hours, days, weeks, months, years in my goal of reaching the the prize as well...? What am I doing daily to accomplish the transforming to Christlikeness...I know it is not a performance, but a relationship ...but am I striving for that deep relationship?   Do I lean into the leadership of the Holy Spirit letting Him, coach me in truth...do I listen to those instructions, following them for my betterment in the race of life..? Pressing on toward the Real prize ?  Not just the adulations of earth, but the "well done, good and faithful servant"?

Time for self examination again...Thank YOU that you are always there, through the race, "coaching", never taking your eye off our goal...help me to persevere...to win the race... With you, through you, in you...in me...

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

National Memorial Day Concert...

Every year there is a concert in Washington, D.C...honoring those in the military service as well as their families...those who are serving and those who have served this country...it happened again last night ...bringing those tears again...that thankfulness again for those have given of and given their lives for us all in this country...

This morning I read this following devotional and wondered what the news headlines were for the this am...
Bus bombings, chaos on most every continent, killing of Christians and anyone, more violent movies, world leader discontent, backbiting, anger, slander, prosimcuty....reads like Galatians 5

Galatians 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

I won't find my peace in the headlines...

The inner and outer turmoil only increases as end times draw near which may be tomorrow or in the distant future...I don't know....we are just told to be ready...prepared...

The Lamp....

The Lamp...

Form the beginning to the end, lamp, lights are spoken of...pictures for our finite mind to slightly comprehend the magnificent light that we have in Jesus...

It shone in the tabernacle...reflecting off the walls of gold, brilliance all around...just as Jesus shines...molded of pure gold...burning in the darkness...turning it to light..

I was caught by the verse in Proverbs 20, about the human spirit being the lamp of the Lord...shedding light on our inmost being...then I had to follow the "rabbit trail" of lamps... Having Jesus, He is the Word which lights the way...we need no other...he turns darkness into light...as no other can...

Thank YOU ....for your light ...showing the way...

Exodus 35:14 the lampstand that is for light with its accessories, lamps and oil for the light;

Exodus 40:4 Bring in the table and set out what belongs on it. Then bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps.

Light streaming...

Light streaming...

I have been listening to the book, "the three year swim club". Am at a part, where the author is describing the fitting of ocean liners for the war effort in   World War 2, taking out the lights, covering the window, portholes so that no light would show through...

Or other recounting of lives when windows were blackened by coverings or paint so that light wouldn't show habitation...

This morning, the sun is shining outside, squeaking through any tiny slits around my bedroom's blackout drapes...making way for the light to shine...

Light will penetrate the darkness...just like Gods love penetrates...as much as we sometimes feel that life is dark, God's love is lighter, greater...thank YOU...

John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Psalm 18:28 You, Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.

Psalm 118:27 The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.

John 1:4-5, 9 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

Colonoscopies...

Colonoscopies ....

Just what everyone wants to have...

Since my family has colon cancer in the genes, I am "required" to undergo this procedure regularly...and the "joke" is that the preparation is worse than the actual procedure...that may be true, but the procedure is not necessarily fun either...I don't like "going" under...you know, loss of "control"... ( like we have any control!) ....It is just the principle of the matter...

But, the goal is a "clean" bill of health...so I go along with it...desiring truth at the outset...

Reading through the Proverbs again brings that same desire of cleansing as well...getting rid of the garbage, the foolishness, replacing it with wisdom, discernment, godliness, understanding, worth, truth...

I personally don't want to be described by others as the foolish one that is described over an over again in the chapters of the book of Proverbs...full of every vile thing...I want to keep wisdom in view, in my life... I want to be a pride of my children's lives...to keep learning, growing in grace and wisdom...words,  a deep fountain...

So while cleansing the body is good...proper care...how much better is cleansing the mind, heart to truly be at peace with our Creator..seeking His fruit for our lives, following His example for living,  be guided by His Word...

Thank YOU that you care for us inside and out...desiring that we seek your wisdom, follow your decrees...washing us white as snow...

Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Worry. Over and over again....

Worry, over and over again...

My dog has several toys which at times he worries...chewing them until the stuffing comes out piece by piece...or the squeaker is finally silenced, then he drags them around, wanting me to throw the toy for him to fetch over and over again until he at last just lays and worries them again... The more chewed/worried, the better he seems to like them, more like rags at that point than the "nice" toys they started out as...they are "worried" to death...but he picks them out of his toy box the next day and the next to play with and worry over ....

That sounds like something I do, worry over things, gnawing, chewing, picking up where I left off, wasting my time on rags....as if I enjoy worrying...And I don't ....but I still do it even when I do t want to...

Romans 7:15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I don't  want to be obsessed with worries as my father was at the end of his life...I want joy to radiate...peace...calmness...contentment...I want my mind to dwell on good, not bad, not wrongs....I want that peace of God...by letting go of those things of which I fret...not overthinking, not over angonizing, but confronting until it is solved or let go of...

Philippians 4:8-9 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Mother's Day ....

Mother's Day ....

Today is Mother's Day...it is a celebration of mother's... to give acknowledgment of mothers everywhere...

But, for me it is a day of thanksgiving..I had wonderful grandmothers, a wonderful mother and have been blessed with four wonderful, distinctly unique children....gifts to my life, jewels that have been lent to me by a Loving, all knowing God...

I remember each first day with my children...those tiny fingers and toes, the sweet smells (most of the time) of babies...the awe of looking into each of their faces as they were handed over to me to hold...cherish...

I remember the lessons I learned and am still learning from each one through so many phases of life...toddler, school, teen years, adulthood, marriage, grandparent....watching each grow, make decisions, facing their worlds...blossoming...
Watching my grandmothers and mother  through their years, reveling in their love as well... Their gifts of love, skills, faith...

Thank YOU for each...

Psalm 139:13-14, 17 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

More light...

More light...

Yesterday, I installed battery powered motion lights in my back yard..
My intention was to scare away the deer when they jump the fence to eat my  apples, trees, berries, lilacs and whatever they decide to taste as they wonder through...

But, as the lights turned  on last night when I went out after dark, I wondered if I didn't just give them more light to find more delicacies with the new installations...oh, well, I will see  what happens...it was worth a try...someone has to feed them...

Last year I tried bird netting around the trees and that worked well, so will try that again if apples actually set on with our diverse spring weather...

I guess it all comes down to protection against invaders...the deer, the starlings, people, health, thoughts....those things that steal or ravage ....and they can come at anytime, anywhere...and we need fortifications...

Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.
I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.
I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

The Word is one way to protect our lives, thoughts..putting our trust in the one True God..

John 14:6, 26 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Psalm 5:11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.

Now, don't these two things go together...the elephant "watcher" and this devotional from Sarah Young? Faith in sitting still, knowing that God is always with us no matter what the circumstances...so our "nerves of steel" are rooted in the God of hope...

Psalm 46:10-11 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

I am not sure what I would do if that elephant did that to me...cringing, pulling away or sit, supposedly relaxed letting him "nose" around...but, there are times when I know I am supposed to be still...relishing in the knowledge that God is definitely in control...letting his peace wash over, through and around me...

 I read this quote recently...and felt somewhat desolate... Does anyone really care what my life reads? I go day to day, doing what I feel needs to be done, sometimes seeing no one...few know what I do, few see or really care what I do...this is loneliness speaking...

I swim or jog in the pool three times  a week, so I see those people who occupy "my" end of the pool...shop at the grocery store with strangers, attend a Bible study once a week for 7-9 week segments, attend church on Sundays, walk with a neighbor daily, receive 5+ phone calls a day soliciting funds for veterans to political causes, read business letters on the email....play word games with friends regularly and chat with them...mundane things...

Not the day to day phone calls or meals that once graced my married life...the small talk of everyday living, the deep things shared with a lifetime mate, the opinions, feelings felt, the prayers, the hand holding, the intimacies of life... those are gone...never to be repeated...his picture placed on the dresser like a dream of long ago...was it real? Or a fantasy?  Of course, I know it was real, there are growing and maturing families from the union, there are abundant memories, provisions, connections with a multitude of people and originations ...but the day to day is gone...the polishing of the temperaments-gone as well...the challenges of the aloneness has set in for whatever years are left here...I am so glad God has a listening ear...

So, what does my life say?..I want it to read as in Proverbs or Galations, the lists of what a righteous person is...wise, upright, respected, seeking good...giving fruit from the tree of life, attaining life,  blessing others, a listening ear...but sometimes there is a bleeding, weeping, selfish heart underneath the outward appearance which needs renewing by the Word of encouragement...soul filling music of worship...Thank YOU  for  your encouragement...your heart of love and compassion which speaks to my soul in the depths...and you bring me out of the miry clay... And place my feet on solid ground...

Proverbs 11

Psalm 40:2-3, 5 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God.

Uncovering plaques...

Uncovering plaques...

I was reading recently that England's Queen's husband, Philip, is retiring from his official duties soon...he is in his nineties as is she..

He has performed  22,000+  official duties since their marriage began...plus fathered children, been her companion, confidant, but has been in the background, supporting her role as queen for many years...

One comment he made was, "I have gotten really good at unveiling plaques" as part of his official duties over the years...

That comment struck my funny bone, even though there is serious need for persons who are given the duty of "unveiling plaques"... Those people, who in the background, serve others without complaint...those mothers and fathers who night after night rise to take care of little ones...or wait for that teenager to come home late....or caregivers, working around the clock...janitors, who polish the walls of schools, government buildings....bus driverrs, who safely transport millions of children to and from school...secretaries who know a business in and out to help build up the owners....the street cleaners, snow plowman, electricians, who keep things running smoothly...background people we never acknowledge...the people listed in the credits of a movie that made the picture work...the laborers who get us our veggies and fruit...the missionaries working in far away fields of ministry...etc., etc., etc......the unknown and little talked about who labor...who know how to unveil plaques well...their jobs are so very important...

Thank YOU for the labor You have each of us, the path you have prepared...help me to do my part well, diligently....for your service..where our Hope is..

Psalm 128:1-2 Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him.

This poem was shared recently, and I finally tracked down the author before I could share  it again..


A Strong Woman versus A Woman of Strength

A strong woman works out every day to keep her body in shape…but a woman of strength kneels in prayer to keep her soul in shape.
A strong woman isn’t afraid of anything…but a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of her fear.
A strong woman won’t let anyone get the best of her…but a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.
A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future...a woman of strength realizes life’s mistakes can also be God’s blessings and capitalizes on them.
A strong woman walks sure-footedly…but a woman of strength knows God will catch her when she falls.
A strong woman wears the look of confidence on her face…but a woman of strength wears grace.
A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey…but a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.

It reminded me of the following verses in 2 Corinthians-
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

 2 Corinthians 12:10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

As well as so many others..on whom do we really trust, from whom does our strength come from...

Psalm 121:1-8 I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

I need reminding of these words, this strength-not my own, continually in my   "Self-reliant" attitude that creeps in and takes over..

Proverbs 10:11, 13, 19-21, 31-32 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.

The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value.

The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of sense.

From the mouth of the righteous comes the fruit of wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be silenced.

Just in one chapter of Proverbs comes these descriptions of words from a righteous person...what blessings to find these...what blessings to hear them, or to be able to give them...

What it must have been like to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His words as Mary and so many did...the Righteous one giving out wisdom, nourishment...as opposed to those perverse ones hovering around finding fault...scheming a way to silence Him...

Thank YOU that you gave us your Word...that you care enough that all should have the opportunity to hear your word around the world in so many different heart languages...

Understanding ....

Understanding....

I was reading in the book of Proverbs...chapter 9 to be exact...the word, "understanding" stood out in bold letters it seemed...

There are over 100 references to this word...throughout the scriptures...many in the books of Job, Psalms, Proverbs plus a few others...It references those with and without understanding...God used men of understanding to design and build the tabernacle in the wilderness ...

Merriam Webster defines understand as-
* :  a mental grasp :  comprehension
a :  the power of comprehending; especially  :  the capacity to apprehend general relations of particulars
b :  the power to make experience intelligible by applying concepts and occurrences... 

Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.

But, looking at the old and New Testaments, how God reveals understanding through his Son...

Psalm 49:3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.

Meditating on God's word gives understanding, learning from Jesus gives understanding, leaning into God gives understanding...

When we don't  do these things, then we become as those without understanding, mockers, fools, scoffers, unwise....

I am just scratching  the surface of understanding...I know so little, but desire much more...but, it is promised if I seek it...

Thank YOU for opening the door to understanding...You promise to come in and dine, sit awhile, providing abundantly, give understanding...

Psalm 119:130, 144 The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.
Your statutes are always righteous; give me understanding that I may live.
