Surpassing love...
Today would be my 49th wedding anniversary, but, alas, it was not to be...I assumed from the beginning of our marriage that, of course, we would celebrate 50+ years as my grandparents did as well my parents and my husband's parents...that was the expectation, the reward...long lives together...But, God had other plans, as he often does...He gave us 43 years instead....but, more than that he gave us Himself...a much greater love than a short 50 years ...much richer, more eternal...infinite...the years on earth are fleeting, vanishing in a vapor...while eternity is, well, eternal...
Thank YOU for years You did give us...thank you for the gift of yourself, your surpassing love ....

HOW PRICELESS IS MY UNFAILING LOVE!
This is truly a gift of heavenly proportions. Remember the unspeakable price I paid to secure this gift for you: I endured torture, humiliation, and death. My willingness to suffer so much for you demonstrates how extravagantly I love you. I want you to comprehend how astonishingly rich you are in Me. Blessing boxes...
Blessing boxes...
My local library has a craft night each month except January. this month, December they had two to make up for the January break. The first one was a felt Rudolph ornament with a LED blinking light nose and the second class is a "blessing box".
Above my headboard of my bed, I decorated the wall with vinyl words, "grateful, thankful, blessed" to remind me each day to "think on these things". So the blessings box caught my eye as something to do as another reminder...
But, as I looked up "blessing box" ideas, I found another dimension....blessing boxes, bags to give away instead of keeping or watching for...lists of ideas to fill bags, containers to hand out to the less fortunate...or patterns for street side cupboards to bless those around you...with games, food stuffs, sharing libraries...a much broader take of the small blessing boxes we are making...all to bless others...giving out in a giving time of the year...blessing others...
Thank YOU that you blessed the World with the greatest Gift of all, your Son...in whom you were pleased...help me to give as you have blessed me...freely...help me to discern the best giving, and the blessings to give...
Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Light in the darkness...
Light in the darkness....
My shipboard roommate sleeps later than I do each morning...so I open my iPad and iPhone to read, catch up on email, do my daily devotions, read the daily activities and finally leaving the room to catch each sunrise in photos...
So as I read this morning's "Jesus Always" selection, I was reminded of the light that illumines my space in our room... It shines each morning in the darkness of my space from my iPad. The Word of God, the earthly life of Christ, the comfort and truth of the Holy Spirit lighting up my world each day.
Thank YOU that you came to give life and light to a dark an desperate world...You bring the choice of eternal life with You to mankind...You being truth, bread for our souls, light out of darkness to all who put their faith in you....

I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD! Many people celebrate Advent season by illuminating their homes with candles and decorated trees. This is a way of symbolizing My coming into the world—eternal Light breaking through the darkness and opening up the way to heaven. Nothing can reverse this glorious plan of salvation. All who trust Me as Savior are adopted into My royal family forever!
My Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it. No matter how much evil and unbelief you see in this dark world, I continue to shine brightly—a beacon of hope to those who have eyes that really see. So it’s crucial to look toward the Light as much as possible. Fix your eyes on Me, beloved! Through thousands of good thought-choices, you can find Me—“ see” Me—as you journey through this life. Have My Spirit help you persevere in the delightful discipline of keeping your eyes on Me. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness but will have the Light of Life.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”—JOHN 8: 12
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.—EPHESIANS 1: 5 NLT

Poor , tired and alone...
Poor, tired and alone...
I like reading historical Christian novels...they put me to sleep. Calming my mind at night. I have read them since I was a teen for the same reason...a part of my nightly routine to get to sleep...
From the "Little house on the prairie " series to modern day novels or even diaries of people long ago...no mysteries to make my mind try to solve something...just life on the prairie...
Those people were true heroes...they left families in the east, travelled by wagons, went through hardships that make our lives look pretty cushy...most were poor looking for new opportunities, taking few belongings, looking and working for a dream....children were born, some perished, widows and widowers were made, rivers crossed, Indians were met and faced, dust storms, bug storms, deserts, bandits....and much more were faced, plus just the drudgery of day to day dust, dirt and walking....to come to places where they either prospered or didn't....
Now is the season we remember our Savior's birth....I think of his earthly parent's journey ....they were not rich, had few earthly possessions and had to travel to new village, pregnant, dusty, roomless...carrying the King to fulfill a prophecy ...no hospitals, no help or mothers to attend...a dirty animal stable to give birth, wrapping Him in the cheapest of cloths...but loved beyond measure...how He gave up the gloriousness to come to earth is unimaginable ....but sorely needed by us, a sin filled mankind...
thank YOU for your sacrifice ....that we might go from poor, tired and alone to rich, righteous and never alone...
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.—2 CORINTHIANS 8: 9
Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.—JOHN 1: 12
And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”—LUKE 2: 10 ESV

Songs..
Songs.....
I am on a ship venturing from one Caribbean port to another...the difference being that it ends right before Christmas...Christmas carols, both old and new are playing continually all day long ....some of my fellow voyagers have decorated their doors with Christmas decorations, the ship is decorated with trees, garlands, tinsel....as we sail to each warm port, far away from the snow covered scenes of the "white Christmas " ....
Bu, we have the tunes on our minds...bringing to mind, if we listened to the words the real reason for the season...Christ's birth...the Savior ...the Emmanuel...
Thank YOU for this wonderful reminder here in the middle of the ocean ports, the warms seas, this ship, that You are with us...
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

SING FOR JOY TO ME, your Strength. Christmas music is one of the best blessings of the season, and it doesn’t have to cost you anything. You can sing the carols at church or in the privacy of your home—or even in your car. As you are making a joyful noise, pay close attention to the words. They are all about Me and My miraculous entrance into your world through the virgin birth. Singing from your heart increases both your Joy and your energy. It also blesses Me. I created you to glorify Me and enjoy Me forever. So it’s not surprising that you feel more fully alive when you glorify Me through song. I want you to learn to enjoy Me in more and more aspects of your life. Before you arise from your bed each morning, try to become aware of My Presence with you. Say to yourself: “Surely the LORD is in this place.” This will awaken your awareness to the wonders of My continual nearness. I will fill you with Joy in My Presence.

Repetition....
Repetition....
I am watching a friend enter the same tunnel I did 6 years ago...listening to her cries, her pain...and the petitions for a miracle...the wonderful family closely surrounding them with love and concern...we are sisters in life...
My husband's best friend, the one who performed his memorial services, the one who listened, counseled, hunted, laughed, encouraged, etc. since college days...they talked often, kept in touch, commiserated with one another over Bible issues, bears, caribou, fishing, children and probably wives for forty plus years...
I yell in my soul...this can't be happening again, not to these people...not to another faithful servant...I cry in the silence of the early morning hours...watching the repetition....that tunnel where you wonder if the light at the end is another train or the light of day....God, You are there, aren't You...
Looking the some of the Psalms...
3:5 I lie down and sleep...I wake again because the Lord sustains me...
4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety..
23:2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,
Or
"His love endures forever" repeated over and over in the psalms ...100:5,
106:1, 107:1, 117:2, 118, 136...
Or
"Do not be afraid" from the beginning to the end of the Bible...
Loving endearments that hold us in the hard times, through laughter and tears...giving us peace when the world crashes around us...when the storms of life gather like black clouds or hurricane winds sweeping us into places we really don't want to go...repeated...
Peace, peace, He whispers to our souls...and we hang on for dear life, not realizing sometimes that He is carrying us in infinitely strong arms...and we just need to lay back and rest...He is the sustainer...the comforter...

fellowship 101 ...to eternity....
Fellowship 101...to eternity...
This weekend was another memorable weekend with inclusion of a gathering of one my children's friends. Food, laughter, fun gifts were exchanged...
I cannot remember a time that my family did not gather together for some reason...birthdays, holidays, whatever...it may have been playing cards with college friends of my parents or camping in the California redwoods, a beach cookout...groups down the years with no children, preschoolers to teenagers to married adults....time honored fellowship all over the globe ...what wonderful memories and we are still making them...
I love to see my children and grandchildren carry on with fellowships, longtime friendships, family gatherings that makes lives rich...these times count and bring fullness to our lives...thank YOU for the blessings of friends and family...the memories that are made...the laughter and sometime the tears.....
We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
Luke 22:7-9,14
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another —and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Fellowships from the beginning to the wedding feast in heaven...getting together is a blessing...thank YOU again...
Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

Praying for me...you...
Praying for me...you...
I was again struck by John 17:20-26, Jesus praying for those who are coming ...me...you...our children...our friends...those who are in Him...
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. It is a comfort beyond words that we have an advocate, we have the ultimate prayer warrior...Jesus, the very son of God...praying on our behalf...as well as the Holy Spirit who utters words when we can't even pray...
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

What a powerful love...a Father who listens....His Son, who prays for us and died to save us...a Spirit who intercedes in accordance with God's will, comforts and lives in us as a seal of that love...

I was again struck by John 17:20-26, Jesus praying for those who are coming ...me...you...our children...our friends...those who are in Him...
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Worthy....?
Worthy...?
I'll admit that there are sometimes I doubt my worthiness...or even worth...and I ask "how can it be" that such a great God would love such as me...then verses come flooding in chasing the doubt away ...as well as this old hymn...
Thank YOU...for your Word...your comfort...

Everything's great....
Everything's great...
As do most people, I want each day without pain or problems ....oh foolish thought...that just doesn't happen...there is pain from birth to death...
I want total security from our government as do many people...it is our right, isn't it, to be totally without fear of anything happening...I want them to do what is always right for all of the citizens...except they are just as normal as everyone else....not without a sin nature...
I heard this week that at least 40% of the millennial generation felt that our nation should switch to a socialist form or government, to be taken care of...less work...more pleasure ...less commitment...less pain...
These all sound great, but in reality that just doesn't happen..there is pain, there is evil, there is sin...as well as there is good...and it is our lot to accept...
I was thinking about this earlier and then the following devotional was in my inbox this am...God speaking yet again into my life...He is there...with his Word , with himself...he knows my thoughts...thank YOU....
“Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure, lounging in your security and saying to yourself, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or suffer the loss of children.’
Isaiah 47:8
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Read: Job 2:9-13
He replied, You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? In all this, Job did not sin in what he said (Job 2:10).
Job's rebuke is a very gentle one. He did not say, You foolish woman! He said, You are talking like a foolish woman. He is not attacking her; rather, he is suggesting that this is a temporary lapse of faith on her part and that, for the moment, she has begun to repeat the words of stupid, foolish women who have no knowledge of the grace and glory of God. In that gentle rebuke you can see something of the sturdiness and tenderness of Job's faith. In this great sentence, he again reasserts the sovereignty of God: Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble? Job's wife had the philosophy that life ought to be pleasant, and if it were not, there was no use living it.
That philosophy is widespread in our own day, and a mounting suicide rate testifies to the universal acceptance of it. But this book is given to show us that life is not to be lived on those terms. The reason we are here is not necessarily to have a good time. There are meaningful objectives to be attained in life, even when it all turns sour. When the pressure comes, when living is no longer fun, life is still worth living. A philosophy that wants to abandon everything as soon as things become unpleasant is a shallow, mistaken, distorted view of life. Job reaffirms that. Shall we not take both good and evil from the hand of God? We take His joy and His pleasure, the pleasant things of life, with gladness and gratitude. If God chooses to send something that is difficult, shall we then abandon that gratitude and begin to curse Him in protest because life is suddenly different than we thought it would be? The reason we are here is not merely that we might have a good time, and this is taught everywhere in the Scriptures. God, in His grace and glory, does give us many hours of joy and gladness and pleasure and delight, and it is right for us to give thanks. But do not abandon that when the time of pressure comes, because that is what Satan wants us to do. He wants us to begin to complain and protest to God; to get upset and angry and resentful; to stop going to church or to reading the Bible. That is what Satan's whole attack on our lives is aimed at doing.
Father, strengthen my faith in You, that I can accept from Your hand both good and evil. Thank You that Your purposes for me, though sometimes painful, are always good.
Life Application
Sometimes meaning and purpose for our lives gets out of focus. Do we then give in to despair? When we choose to trust God, then we can offer His comfort to others.

"Farewell " tour....
"Farewell" tour ....
Last night I attended the "farewell to Nampa" tour of the Patrick McManus presentation by Tim Behrens.
"This will be the last show that Tim will perform in Nampa for a while. Seating will be at tables in the grand room at the Center, and finger food will be available, as well as a no-host bar. Not only will the show feature the favorite stories of Pat and Tim, but Tim will also regale you with Tales from The Road and 25 years of touring!"
The venue was packed to capacity, with tables and chairs, chairs around the room...it was like sitting in a room with old friends, those who have read, shared, loved and laughed at the stories of Patrick for years...unforgettable stories that we read to ourselves, to our children and now grandchildren...
As a family, we would read the books as we travelled the highways back and forth to grandparents, taking turns reading and laughing...along with the "little house on the prairie" and James Herriot's veterinarian adventures...reading them at night before bedtimes as well...what enjoyable memories...I can even picture Jesus sitting at the table enjoying the humor of their stories...
We first attended one of these presentations when our children were in school, elementary, junior high and high school. We came out with aching cheeks from laughing so much...at that time Patrick travelled with Tim and signed books. Now Patrick, 85, has retired from writing and traveling with Tim...
These are the pleasant memories of laughter together...family fun...times you cherish...added Into the years of growing up...before scattering as adults...the year go so quickly...but, laughter is good medicine...and good for the soul...
Thank YOU for the talents of these men who so shared their lives with so many others through the written word and one man plays...You give us joy in so many ways...
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,
I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.

50 year anniversary...December 1...
50 year anniversary...December 1...
50 years ago today, I awoke with expectancy and a little fear...I had signed up to meet a stranger that night...a computer date...at our school...a school wide activity...if you wanted to do it...I had talked several of the girls in my floor into doing this... You know- "suffer together" ...
I had never done anything like this...so totally out of character...(and now we see several computer dating match sites advertised). This was computer punch card era...how they were matched I don't know...we had both put "travelled to Alaska", (we deduced that was probably our matching factor)...at least we thought so...similar backgrounds, values we found out...rural, farming, small town people...independent, fidelity, "religious", parents still married, family oriented...factors which we later built on...
He was the last of the men to show up for their date...I was scared stiff...we were to go to a dance, but sat and talked all evening instead... It was the end of the term, finals week followed and then Christmas break...we exchanged Christmas cards...I don't remember how we got each other's addresses, but I remember sending one first...and then receiving his in return...
When school resumed in January, he saw me studying in the library, out of the snow, we visited and then started seeing one another regularly and the rest is history, so they say...
On this day 50 years ago, I never envisioned the life we would have together, the children we were blessed with, the joys and heartaches, the highs and lows, the lean and fat years, the faith that carried us through it all...But God did...I am thankful that He saw fit to put us together...even though I spend this anniversary as a widow...I wouldn't change it...wonderful, wonderful times were had in our marriage...
Thank YOU...for the partner You gave, the years You blessed us with, the children and grandchildren You continue to bless me with...along the path...
I know this verse speaks of end times, but death came as a thief in our marriage...and we desired to finish well..to live holy and godly lives as partners here...we didn't always succeed, but we worked on it...
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives
2 Peter 3:10-11
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord.
For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.
Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Looking back/forward...
looking back/ forward....
After visiting over the holidays with some of my children and grandchildren, and looking for forward to the next set of holidays and more visiting with more children and grandchildren...the times together make me reminiscent of their growing up years, their lives into adulthood, each of our journeys/paths...the fires and joys we/they have seen, taken and will potentially face...
I can't worry about our futures, but plan as well as I possibly can with the proper documents for estate planning in place...but more than those documents, it is the example of Paul in 2 Timothy, that looms more important ...it is the interpersonal relationships of the past, present and future...
I am not trying to be morose or defeated or looking death in the face, but making sure to the best of my present ability I finish well, and that my descendants have that opportunity and example...have I done my best, what do I need to improve... When to speak and when to stay silent...when do I need to encourage or admonish...when do I need to back off or move forward ...when do I hug or keep my distance...those fine lines of caring...

Read: 2 Timothy 4:5-8
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race. I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).
Paul uses three phrases that sum up his life's accomplishments. What would you say about your life if you were looking back and summing up in brief words what had been accomplished? Here are the apostle's words.
First, he says, I have fought the good fight. It is very important to see he did not say, I have fought a good fight, as he is often quoted as saying. If he had said that, it would be indicative of his view of how well he had done. It would be boasting: I've fought a good fight. I've pitched in there and done the right thing. But that is not what he says. He says, I have fought the good fight, meaning the significant fight, the great battle that life had presented to him.
Paul says, I have finished the race. That is another common figure in his writings. In Philippians 3 he describes that race: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus, he says (Philippians 3:13b-14). The race, of course, is the Christian life itself, which is lived moment by moment, just as a race is run step by step. The question is whether you live each step in the flesh or in the Spirit, whether you are walking in the power of the new life you have from Christ or whether you are still running in the old ways of thinking, the old self-centered, fleshly, self-serving attitudes. Every moment is either contributing to reaching the goal for the prize or delaying it, wasting time in the flesh. Christians are called to run that race.
Third, the apostle says, I have kept the faith. He means by that the whole body of truth that is involved in the gospel, what he calls in 1 Corinthians God's secret wisdom (1 Corinthians 2:7a). This wisdom is totally different from the wisdom of this world. It is the truth that God tells us about ourselves and about Himself, about this world and why it is the way it is. It is the truth about the power of evil, the secret power of lawlessness (2 Thessalonians 2:7), and the mystery of godliness (1 Timothy 3:16) with which we can counteract evil. That is the faith that Paul is talking about. On the very edge of eternity he can say of himself, I have kept the faith. I have not lost any of the good deposit that God has entrusted to me. He has guarded it as a treasure, and he tells Timothy in turn to guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you (2 Timothy 1:14). Paul has kept this treasure from being mistreated or distorted by those who would try to twist it and use it for their own purposes. He has answered its critics. He has warned those who would take it astray, as he does in this very letter; thus he has kept the faith.
Lord, grant me the grace to fight the good fight, finish the race, and keep the faith. Thank You that You are faithful to enable me to do that.
Life Application
Finishing well is a worthy aim. Are we clearly defining the journey? Have we grasped the power available in Christ to regularly encounter obstacles and counteract evil?

After visiting over the holidays with some of my children and grandchildren, and looking for forward to the next set of holidays and more visiting with more children and grandchildren...the times together make me reminiscent of their growing up years, their lives into adulthood, each of our journeys/paths...the fires and joys we/they have seen, taken and will potentially face...
I can't worry about our futures, but plan as well as I possibly can with the proper documents for estate planning in place...but more than those documents, it is the example of Paul in 2 Timothy, that looms more important ...it is the interpersonal relationships of the past, present and future...
I am not trying to be morose or defeated or looking death in the face, but making sure to the best of my present ability I finish well, and that my descendants have that opportunity and example...have I done my best, what do I need to improve... When to speak and when to stay silent...when do I need to encourage or admonish...when do I need to back off or move forward ...when do I hug or keep my distance...those fine lines of caring...

Thankfulness...
Thankfulness.....
There are times in life that are really difficult to say thanks...those days when everything seems to go wrong, those diagnosis's that chill your mind, the times when we wonder "why", the sleepless nights for a myriad of reasons...but even thou we may not feel like it or not even want to, we have to come back to gratitude or not ...in the big or little of life...
I flew almost across the United States twice in the last week...I was thankful for a working aircraft, on time arrivals, no lost luggage...and families at both destinations...the beauty of the scenery at either end, the safety in day to day travel...the hugs, the cuddles, the sharing of lives at each end, the fast communication systems we have, the warn beds, rooms, the spectacular sunrises and sunsets....things I take for granted, but need to acknowledge...the "everyday" blessings...
But, also the deeper eternal thankfulness, as Sarah Young has listed, salvation, Grace, faith...I take these for granted as well...they just are for those who believe or not...they are available for all...and when I do take time to ponder these infinite gifts...I am overwhelmed and filled with a joy that is overpoweringly deeper than can be described...
Thank YOU for bringing me back to thankfulness from looking at the ingratitude...you have given so much ...
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

Cycles....
Cycles...
My husband used to say that mining was cyclical...and it is as well as other industries ...for mining is was almost a ten year cycle. 10 years up,and then ten down...
In the early 1970's, he had few jobs, then that turned and we had the largest geologist office in the state with 27 employees. By the early 80's there was a definite downturn and we were down to himself again....and so it went...back and forth...God always supplied what we needed and sometimes more but never less...
We were only called about an overdue bill once, but still made the payment quickly...and didn't go into arrears...there were a couple of years that we actually ate "garbage". That was a fun and humbling adventure...and we had some of the best food in town ....we knew the produce manager for one of the local grocery stores...and we got all of the outdated produce for our animals..but, I was able to sort through and use what was usable for our family first...we ate the most expensive veggies and fruits because their dates were expired...plus there was lots left for the animals...so each week we loaded up the whole back end of our truck, sorted, and even gave some away...
The next year as our income increased, health laws were passed that people couldn't do what we had done anymore...we felt like God had just opened that door for us...
Other years, our garden produced so much that we took our truck to church and shared off the back end with others... Or another time, we found an abandoned homestead with apple trees loaded with fruit that supplied apples and apple sauce for the winter...other years, we were able pick berries by the bushel for berry pie filling, jellies or canned berries ....we never knew what the supply would be from year to year, but we were always so grateful as we harvested garden produce or whatever came along...thankful...
As one of my grandsons read to me yesterday about the Pilgrims and their hardships, as well as the Indians who helped them with their crops, I was reminded of the gratefulness we had in common...years apart...God is the giver...the supplier...the provider...thank YOU...
At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. The goal is equality, as it is written: “The one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little.”
2 Corinthians 8:14-15
26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. Verse study...1 Corinthians 10:13
Verse study...1 Corinthians 10:13
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

Was thinking about doing another verse study, so landed on 1 Corinthians 10:13, but that ended up being verses 12 and 14 which surround it with warnings and commands... be careful, don't fall, flee...the temptation that is spoken of in verse 13...
I don't know about you, but I am tempted all the time, in my attitude, food, my spending of time or resources....and I am not always careful, nor do I always flee...I park on a bad attitude, thoughts, chocolate, or something until I realize that I have fallen into that temptation which is common to mankind...not standing firm when I should, not fleeing when I should, not being careful....I don't want to be enslaved by something that takes my allegiance away from God...
But, somethings are subtle, like the frog in a pot of cold water over a burner...he cooks...slowly...slowly...and doesn't even know it until it is too late ....and he is gone...frog legs, anyone?
So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Good news...
Good news...
Last week the news wasn't always so good, but it was interspersed amongst the not so good...
I like to hear good news, just saying....but hearing good news out of bad is, well, good...
Like opportunity out of troubles rather than just troubles...
Or love out of a shoe box...good news and opportunity in one...
This week is worldwide collection of shoe boxes from one person to another....we don't know where those boxes will end up, but each box carries good news, a few gifts and much prayer as it finds its way through the mazes of packaging and shipping until it is handed to a child somewhere in the world...good news...
Being an instrument/tool of God's gifts is amazing...from an encouraging word, act of kindness, a gift given, whatever...it warms the heart to see or be a part of His plan...a minuscule part of an infinite picture...
When I get a tiny glimpse, I want to run home and tell my husband, share it him, laughing, encouraged about the blessing...knowing he will laugh with me....but the house is devoid of his presence, gone are the sharing moments ...so I share it with God instead....and hand those joys back over to Him who gave them in the first place...maybe He will share them in heaven (not sure of that connection)...I will shed my tears of joy and sorrow and move on...
Thank YOU for Good news, the very Good News that can be shared worldwide ...thank YOU gifts given, letting us be a part of your plan in whatever capacity you desire...thank you...
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Romans 8:28-29
Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Cisterns....
Cisterns....
One of the first places we worked when my husband was in graduate school was way out in the mountains of northern Nevada...my husband was hired for the summer to map a certain area for a mining company...
We had a 16 foot travel trailer, an old Scout for transportation and lived at an old homestead with no buildings, just a stone foundation, one fruit tree, one shade tree and a cistern with fresh water...
My husband dug a hole next to one of the trees for our "outhouse"... We parked next to the other tree for shade...no electricity, gas for cooking and a forty mile drive over graveled roads to town, laundry and shopping...
Driving that Scout was an adventure...the dust roiled in through every hole until we were covered with dust from head to toe and then some...I think if we would have had duct tape at the time, we would have used it for covering up the holes... But we made do and took baths when we could instead...
That is why we enjoyed the cistern each day so much...we had two wash tubs, some scraps of lumber from the decomposing cabin and a hose...so my husband syphoned the water from the cistern down a little slope to the washtubs which sat on the lumber...so we had two "bathtubs" each evening to enjoy...(the wild horses enjoyed the fresh water as well)...an amazing open view as we washed the days grim off...
I know I have written about this before, but reading about cisterns in the Word brought it to mind again...Joseph was thrown into a cistern which was dry, fortunately for him...Jeremiah was thrown into a cistern which was muddy....the Samaritan woman drew out of a cistern, but wanting the living water which Jesus offered....and we are offered the free gift of the water of life...
Out in the mountains where we were, we couldn't have lived without that wonderful fresh water bubbling each day for our cleansing and use...it was truly a gift...and life not only for us but the animals roaming the area...
Thank YOU for the water of life that You offer to everyone who comes and asks...freely bestowed...
The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.
Revelation 22:17

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Halloween ....and beyond...
Halloween...and beyond...
Now that Halloween is over, the stores can stock with nice stuff...I have an aversion to all the ghoulish stuff that comes with Halloween...too garish and evil looking...there is enough of the real evil without emphasizing it for my taste...
I am a Halloween baby, meaning I was born on Halloween decades ago...and the decades are accumulating...so I want good things to show off my fall birthday...the rich colors of fall, the harvest, the changing of the seasons, the pumpkins, fall apples...fun costumes-fairies, princesses, swashbucklers, Knights, creative homemade costumes...a celebration of life and days...
This just points beyond to the celebration we have of thanksgiving for provision and finally to the celebration of our Savior's birth....we don't have exact days for these, but thanksgiving should be ongoing...Christmas represents Christ's birth, without whom we would have no salvation...
Thank YOU for fall, it's experiences, it's richness, it's waiting for the celebration of Life...Real Life in Christ...
then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. I will provide grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Joseph wasn't excited about being a slave...
Elijah was ready to die...
Jonah really didn't want to go to preach to Ninevah...
To name a few...but God's plan prevailed and people were blessed...the world was blessed...
It goes back to handing each day over to God...He is the author, creator, planner...He holds the breath we take...the almighty I AM...

Bread....Bread of Life....

I AM the Bread of life...John 3:35...
I didn't know that Bethlehem means "the house of bread".... And when you think of it, why wouldn't it..? Jesus was born there...the Bread of Life coming from the "house of bread"... It all makes sense ...
God has a plan...alway has, always will...from the beginning to all eternity...it all connects...
All cultures have some kind of bread...why wouldn't God try to connect with his creation in a basic way..bread...that Jesus could be everyones source of food, provision , salvation...

I was reading about the first declaration of Jesus' "I Am"-- the bread of life...
After he had given thanks and fed at least 5000 people...
Giving thanks---and food abounded , feeding multitudes...
Philippians giving thanks and peace abides...
Giving thanks is first listed in Leviticus and goes all the way to Revelations...it should be that way in my life, it definitely bring more blessings than grouchy get around...thanking God for who He is and what he has done ...I particularly like the phrase in Daniel when he was facing adversity, "just as he had done before". He gave thanks...
It is God's will that we should give thanks...and He has give us soooo very much in the salvation that we need...thanks be to God...

Sharing love...
Sharing....
When someone goes on a mission trip, it is almost a requirement to share with the ones left behind how the trip went, things done, people seen, etc...it can be done one on one, Small groups or in a larger setting...
Yesterday was one of those days...starting with a 5 minute church sharing time...I awoke earlier than usual, thinking through the talk over and over again...stressing as a I have been known to do...not heeding the admonition...
Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Mark 13:11
( I know I wasn't arrested, but kind of felt that way)
The pictures had been chosen beforehand, ready to go.....well, they weren't...and the computer froze, not only for pictures but for worship music later... So "my" plan was trashed and just spoke...wasn't my highest moment...but, it wasn't "my" moment anyway...it was God's. It was His mission, His workings, His trip...it was about sharing Jesus to children and their families in their communities...and I saw empty boxes leaving the building to be filled with gifts...bottom line...that was the purpose...
Later, smaller, more comfortable setting, senior living home, pictures went well...people had time to ask questions...so enthused ....they had done a lot of boxes...still serving later in life...some in their 90's...
Today, again in smaller setting...all so varied, yet the same...hearts to give and give again... Serving differently, yet the same...thank YOU for people all over the globe who are preparing children's boxes to give to others...and thank YOu for preparing those hearts to receive this token of the larger gift of salvation...You work mightily...
Boxing love into a cardboard shoe box...to open the heart of a child to the limitless love of the Creator of universe...
They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor.
Psalm 112:9

Coffee cans...
Coffee cans...
There is a current advertisement about a dad saving his change in a coffee can...he has his own goal written on the side of the can and then changes it to a goal for his son instead as the son watches...it touches my heart...
My husband had a similar can when we met. It was filled with change and he used it for a variety of purchases as well as laundry. the summer before we became engaged and were married, he worked in the proposed wilderness areas in Idaho, camping all week, while looking for minerals. He came out to the town of McCall, once a week to replenish supplies, laundry,and he called me using the change from that can which he stored in his little Volkswagen bug...
He had that can for many years, continuing to drop his loose change in it...as we added children, one project held once a year, the kids would sort the coins, count them and then divide the change into their own piggy banks...I can remember those children hunched over the table with their dad counting the pennies,nickels, dimes and quarters...intently scrutinizing the division of the funds, making sure each got an equal share...plus amazed at the accumulation of "wealth" in that can...a small meaningful gift each year..
This time of year we, as Christians, have the same opportunity to give a small gift of a shoe box to a child somewhere in the world...it could lead to a life change, a family change and even a community change ...for an eternity change...
Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes are being filled, collected, processed and will be sent around the world to 12-13 million children who need to know that God loves them...a simple box goes a long way...
Thank YOU for the opportunity to give back a portion from which You so generously give to us...
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.
In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

It is the assurance...
It is the assurance...
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another —and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him—

It was that last verse in Corinthians that was my assurance of my salvation...I grew up going to to church...a fundamental church at the time, which has changed. I always believed that Jesus was the Son of God, the life and the resurrection...but the words, "saved" or " salvation" were not words I heard in that denomination...later when my husband and I made a commitment to find a church, attend regularly...we chose one that we felt a peace that that was one we were to become involved in...those words were used regularly...
I knew what they meant and felt that I was...but one night we were watching a movie, "left behind" And I thought, "if I haven't said the "right " words or really made that commitment to Christ---I am doing it right now..."
Reading those words soon after that, I knew beyond a shadow of doubt that they were for me...
We each come to that assurance in different ways, different times, different circumstances....it can be earth shattering, or a calm assurance, but knowing beyond a shadow doubt that when we meet Christ face to face, we can claim his promises because He said so is beyond description ...it is a peace that passes understanding...
It is not belonging to a church, it is not growing up in the right or wrong family, it is not a nebulous being,....God is real....He is who he says He is...the Creator, the First and Last, the Mighty, The I AM...the Eternal...and He wants/desires that we know him...personally...He waits/ desires fellowship with each one of us...He loves us and has loved us before we know or knew Him...

"The land of the in between"
"The land of the in between..."
I heard a "new to me" phase yesterday, "the land of the in between".
The pastor was speaking about the Israelites when they were in the desert, having left the slavery of Egypt or the known, moving toward the promised land or the unknown... I did hear the rest of the sermon, but my mind still camped on that phrase...
How much time in life are we in the "land of the unknown"?
- pre teens, we are waiting to be a big "teen"
- As a four year old waiting to be old enough to go to school as a five year old
- As a teenager waiting to be old enough to get that coveted driver's license
- Waiting to become an adult
- Waiting to get married
- Waiting to go to college
- Waiting for that first child
- That first promotion
- The first house
- Anticipatory grief...
- Moving into a new area..
- A doctor's diagnosis...
- Sitting in a hospital, waiting...
- Taking care of the home bound or being home bound...
"The land of the between". There are dozens, hundreds, thousands of that "in between"...where we are moving from the known to the unknown...
The waiting, the anticipation...the moving at times, the not knowing the outcome....sometimes with joy and other times with dread...the promise ahead of good or bad...life changing events...
The Israelites, at times, wanted to go back, even though they were enslaved, to the known of Egypt...instead of moving ahead to the promised land, the land reported as filled with milk and honey...their land...
As we get older, sometimes, we think back on life, wanting to turn back the clock for a "do over", having more wisdom for decisions, take back an action or word...but we move ever closer to our promised land...we may not like the path, or the trials getting there, but we are really in the "land of the in between"... Waiting for our promised land...with so many lessons along the way...trusting the God who goes ahead and prepares the way...thanking Him for the daily provision of sustenance...our journey ...

I heard a "new to me" phase yesterday, "the land of the in between".
The pastor was speaking about the Israelites when they were in the desert, having left the slavery of Egypt or the known, moving toward the promised land or the unknown... I did hear the rest of the sermon, but my mind still camped on that phrase...
How much time in life are we in the "land of the unknown"?
- pre teens, we are waiting to be a big "teen"
- As a four year old waiting to be old enough to go to school as a five year old
- As a teenager waiting to be old enough to get that coveted driver's license
- Waiting to become an adult
- Waiting to get married
- Waiting to go to college
- Waiting for that first child
- That first promotion
- The first house
- Anticipatory grief...
- Moving into a new area..
- A doctor's diagnosis...
- Sitting in a hospital, waiting...
- Taking care of the home bound or being home bound...
"The land of the between". There are dozens, hundreds, thousands of that "in between"...where we are moving from the known to the unknown...
The waiting, the anticipation...the moving at times, the not knowing the outcome....sometimes with joy and other times with dread...the promise ahead of good or bad...life changing events...
The Israelites, at times, wanted to go back, even though they were enslaved, to the known of Egypt...instead of moving ahead to the promised land, the land reported as filled with milk and honey...their land...
As we get older, sometimes, we think back on life, wanting to turn back the clock for a "do over", having more wisdom for decisions, take back an action or word...but we move ever closer to our promised land...we may not like the path, or the trials getting there, but we are really in the "land of the in between"... Waiting for our promised land...with so many lessons along the way...trusting the God who goes ahead and prepares the way...thanking Him for the daily provision of sustenance...our journey ...

Watching and listening...
Watching and listening...

I have been involved with this Bible study for a few weeks...daily lessons, readings...soaking up the words she has put to paper, watching, "listening", reading the scriptures...my former church Bible study was going to do it and I decided that even though I couldn't be present as I have moved, I could still "participate". I could picture the women getting together each week, talking, discussing through the lessons...but I could decide to hear what God was speaking to me through the written words even though I wasn't part of a "group".
I have just finished the study and it was well worth it even by "myself" ...this week they will have a fellowship time before starting a new one...sitting around discussing how they can go forward with this "new" or deeper information...I will be driving back ( Lord willing) to a former home town where years of growth through legalism, church abuse, child rearing, church splits, financial ups and downs, teen rebellion , good health and very bad health, mountain highs, women's ministry took place...memories both bad and much good are there...long time friends are there...homes built, lived in and left are still there...and God was faithful through all those times...he taught my husband and I through provision of much and little, parenthood, music, sermons, emotional upheaval...He was there all the time, weaving our lives, knitting together His love with foundations for the future...with His will and ways....

Verses of encouragement and consequences...
Verses of encouragement and consequences...
The following verses need no explanation..they just hit me in the heart as I read....the questions jumped out---what will I do with them...will I listen.. Will I heed...which path will I take ....thank YOU for your wisdom, your words to my soul...
This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But you said, ‘We will not listen.’
Therefore hear, you nations; you who are witnesses, observe what will happen to them.
Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.

Daunting ....
Daunting...
Moving to a new area has been challenging, daunting, scary and exciting all rolled up into one big adventure...it is one thing when you have someone to share it with, (who had a secretary), but quite another when you are by yourself....I have been sooooo very thankful for my children, their friends and the movers...
Now, comes the daily changes, the doctor, lawyers, the DMV, the dentists, the shopping, the new roads and routes, insurance workers, hairdresser, new church hunts, new neighbors, yard care workers, etc,,,everything new...
When I read through this Devo in "Jesus Always" this morning, I had to thank God again for his watch care through this ordeal....I have tried multiple times to put the "I get to" spin on the new adventures instead of the "I have to"...
The perspective does change my attitude...my outlook on the day....which is helpful...I smile more, look for ideas, feel better, and am less stressed and tired...because I am relying on the Holy Spirit to help me be content...to listen to truth, to wait...

WHEN THE TASK BEFORE YOU looks daunting, refuse to be intimidated. Discipline your thinking to view the challenge as a privilege rather than a burdensome duty. Make the effort to replace your “I have to” mentality with an “I get to” approach. This will make all the difference in your perspective—transforming drudgery into delight. This is not a magic trick; the work still has to be done. But the change in your viewpoint can help you face the challenging chore joyfully and confidently.
As you go about your work, perseverance is essential. If you start to grow weary or discouraged, remind yourself: “I get to do this!” Then thank Me for giving you the ability and strength to do what needs to be done. Thankfulness clears your mind and draws you close to Me. Remember that My Spirit who lives in you is the Helper; ask Him to help you when you’re perplexed. As you ponder problems and seek solutions, He will guide your mind. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart—as working for Me.
Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.—COLOSSIANS 4: 2
"I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever.”—JOHN 14: 16 NKJV
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.—COLOSSIANS 3: 23

Gifts of smiles...

Thousands, no, make that millions of people give the gifts of smiles in a multitude of ways...from Campbell with his gifts of bears to sick children to those who show up with a canoe to a flooded house or the fireman who find a treasure in a burned home...to the doctors who take time to sit down with distraught parents ....or the next door neighbor who shares the Christ of hope ...or the server of a meal at a food kitchen....or the clerk who wishes you a good day as they send us on our way...
Smiles lift the heart, lift the face and may put a new attitude in our heart for a time...
The experiment of smiling at people when we pass in malls, sidewalks, hallways or on our walks...may be just what another needs to change their day...I know it has mine at times...a friendly face, a smiling face can chase away the blues...
It is Operation Christmas Child box filling time again...readying those boxes to be sent around the world to share hope, to share the Word, to share the eternal compassionate good news of Jesus Christ...millions are done each year...millions are given away to children each year...
I was watching a short film about the ministry of Samaritans Purse and was brought back to having the privilege of giving out those boxes in Columbia this last spring...and the miles of smiles...it was a gift to me to see the delight on the faces of children...from a shoe box of simple things and their own book of hope..l
Thank YOU for smiles...
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.
