A thankful prayer….

 A thankful prayer…

Looking up what the pilgrims may have used for a Thanksgiving prayer…

Some say the 107th Psalm…

 Psalm 107

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

his love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south…….”…..and through 43 verses….

Ps.107.1-3+

Others report they would have used the Book of Common Prayer…

“Ever wonder about what the Pilgrims prayed on what we call the “first Thanksgiving,” when they praised God for a successful harvest. The Pilgrims used something called The Book of Common Prayer as well as the Bible. The Book of Common Prayer was created in 1549, and would have been a staple for prayer in the New World.”

A prayer the Pilgrims might have prayed on the first thanksgiving day…

“Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made.

We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.

Amen.”

The Book of Common Prayer (1662, p. 43)

When was the first religious day of thanksgiving?

The Pilgrims’ first recorded religious day of thanksgiving was held in 1623. Plymouth had been stricken with a severe drought. "Upon which," said William Bradford, "they set apart a solemn day of humiliation, to seek the Lord by humble and fervent prayer, in this great distress."  pilgrim hall.

Another suggestion that was interesting…was Mary’s prayer in Luke 1:46-55…

And Mary said:“My soul glorifies the Lord

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has been mindfulof the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed,

for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name.

His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.

He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.

He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.

He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

Luke.1.46-55

Whatever the day…we are admonished to be thankful in everything…

Thank YOU….
