“No one ever spoke like this man…”
John 7:1-52 speaks of Jesus’ visit and participation in the annual celebration of the Festival of the Tabernacles…
This was/is celebrated in the fall to commemorate 40 years in the wilderness, by the building of three walled “booths” which people slept and /or are in for 7 days…also it was associated with fall rains which are needed for the spring crops…it was also the end of
Grape season…
So deliverance
water- All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
Exod.17.1-6
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified .John.7.37-39
wine…
Exodus 23:16
16 "Celebrate the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of the crops you sow in your field. "Celebrate the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather in your crops from the field.
“The good wine”…
The passage has so many back and forth exchanges between the Pharisees and Jesus while He was teaching…with even the the temple guards saying, “ The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
John.7.46
I appreciated this comment…the teachers were trying so hard to trip up Jesus and he would not be distracted…he told it like it was… and here were these guards taking it all in…their hearts and minds were open…
Later like Paul’s guards later on…some of whom were converted to
Christianity…these temple guards stood on the sideline, ease dropping, and heard Jesus speak…and were touched…(makes one wonder if we will see them in Heaven)…Were they thirsty for that living water that Jesus Promised?
thank YOU …all can come to YOU…
