The three little pigs....

The three little pigs....

I recently had the delight to partially watch a cute cartoon with my youngest grandson that seemed to be an offshoot of the timeless tale "the three little pigs"or at least it reminded me of that little story we read to our children when they were small...I remember huffing and puffing over and over again, with a high squeaky piggy voice and the low wolf voice as the pigs ran from one house to another to keep safe...

Those pigs used hay, sticks and finally brick to build their houses...with only the brick standing against the big, bad wolf...the first two wanting the easy, fast way to build while the third pig relied on the strength of the stone to keep him safe...with a firm foundation...

It life, sometimes we want the easy way as well, not wanting to take the time or fearing that the wolf is at the door.  But our "structures" are the hay or sticks and not the brick.....

God has provided us with the a "Rock" on which to build...a much sturdier foundation than what the world of hay and sticks, has to offer..and it is freely given by Him...

God's Rock keeps us safe, secure, and has eternal heavenly promises...not like the hay and sticks which are blown away and have no heavenly promises

I want to be like the third pig, building with the right materials, the right Architect, with the right foundation, the right House...and when tested, God glorified....

Thank YOU, even for the Three Little Pigs....their story reminds me upon whom and with what to build a Sturdy Home...You...

1 Corinthians 3:10-15 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it.
But each one should build with care.
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will  bring it to light.
It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.
If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

Mushrooms....

Mushrooms....

When I was a child, kindergarten through third grade, we lived on a ranch next the foothills of Central California.   It was always hot in the summer, with very little rain, but lots of sunshine to enjoy while playing over summer break...we always had a large garden, next to the livestock corrals and chicken runs...my mother always loved flowers and made every hone we ever lived in a beautiful floral arrangement, vegetables on the side...an idilic childhood...I thought...

But, that first rain in the early fall was a treat, not only for the much need moisture, it meant that the grass would sprout up quickly and that button mushrooms  would pop out the ground like white Easter eggs all over the green hills...that meant we would gather our containers and scramble here and there on the rangeland, gathering as many mushrooms as we could...they only came once!!!

My mother would slice them to eat raw, sauté them with homemade butter and add them to various dishes, From scrambled eggs to soups to meats...what a treat...an abundant free gift...

Now we can purchase these mushrooms year around as well as so many other types...

I was reminded of this long forgotten special rainfall as I was driving across Oregon recently and then taking a walk with my youngest grandson...there along the road,  in the barely green grass were those button mushrooms, making their appearance after the first warm fall rain...I picked a couple in honor of those bygone days...in the "remember whens"... I even looked toward heaven, and showed my parents...they would smile and say,,,"what fun and simple things"....

Thank YOU for the little things, the fall rains, the simple mushrooms that spring up in profusion...You provide ....

Psalm 65:5-9, 11-13 You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations.
The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;where morning dawns, where evening fades, you call forth songs of joy.
You care for the land and water it;you enrich it abundantly.
The streams of God are filled with waterto provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.
You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.
The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;the hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocksand the valleys are mantled with grain;they shout for joy and sing.

Deuteronomy 32:2 Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.

Psalm 68:9 You gave abundant showers, O God;you refreshed your weary inheritance.

The flag....

The flag .....

One of the program's we watched as a kid was a weekly Red Skelton show. I don't know what he was like for real, but as an entertainer, he seemed to be such a humble, likable person.   He had a hobo act, a drunken man, a clown and others which were all so good and clean humor ...he could make you cry or laugh  simply by his words and actions...

I was reminded of him again as this YouTube came around again...

It is so fitting in our world of chaos, agitation, dehumanizing, disrespect, hurt, election rhetoric, anger, ....

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBTyTWOZCM

We are to pray for our government, our leaders, one another...offering hope, respect, care, burden sharing...
We are to encourage one another, offering a hand, a hug, a word...

Thank YOU that bring examples of hope, encouragement, Your Word, from so many places...help me see your handiwork, your fingerprints in the world around me...help me not to be blind to your working in my life...YOU are beyond description...but You care for the details of life...

Titus 3:1-2 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

Romans 13:1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

Colossians 1:16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.

The Master Weaver...

The Master Weaver's plan

My life is but a weaving
Between the Lord and me;
I may not choose the colors-
He knows what they should be...

For He can view the pattern
Upon the upper side
While I can see it only
On this, the under side.

Sometimes He weaves in sorrow,
Which seems so strange to me;
But  I will trust His judgment
And work on faithfully.

Tis He who fills the shuttle,
And He knows what is best;
so I shall weave in earnest,
And leave to Him the rest.

Not 'til the loom is silent
and the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.

The dark threads are as needed
In the Weaver's skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.

Author unknown

This summer, I took one of my grandsons on a short trip to the Grand Canyon , Zion and Bryce national parks...one of the stops we made was a trading post along the highway. A room was dedicated to a native American who sat at a large loom weaving row after row the woolen threads into a design she had created...it was fascinating watching her push the shuttle holding the yarns back and forth, back and forth...she had a pattern off to the side which she was following. Every once in a while a thread would break and she would stop and tie a knot, making sure the knot was on the back side and didn't show through to the front. Or she would change colors, knotting and weaving In the loose ends. Frequently, she took a tool like a large comb to push down the threads and tighten the rows so that they would not be loose and thin. She knew her pattern and she knew how to achieve the finished product...she was the Master weaver for her work of art..

Each day of our lives the "shuttle" moves back and forth adding to our design  that God has planned.   Sometimes He adds darker days, like the colors in a weaving...they enhance and highlight the lighter colors, making the other colors stand out in contrast...if the whole weaving/ life were without contrasts, the tapestry or life would not nearly as beautiful...and not nearly as interesting to look at...we learn through the darker ones ...and added, make the picture complete..

I personally don't like the darker days, I want everything to be easy, no pain, but then I would not know contrasts that make life a wonderful weaving on which the Master Weaver works...and would take for granted the designs along the way...

Thank YOU, that You have a design and pattern planned for each of our lives...filled with lights and darks, colors of every hue...woven by Your skilled hand...

Exodus 35:23-29, 35 Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen, or goat hair, ram skins dyed red or the other durable leather brought them.
Those presenting an offering of silver or bronze brought it as an offering to the Lord, and everyone who had acacia wood for any part of the work brought it.
Every skilled woman spun with her hands and brought what she had spun—blue, purple or scarlet yarn or fine linen. And all the women who were willing and had the skill spun the goat hair.
The leaders brought onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.
They also brought spices and olive oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense.
All the Israelite men and women who were willing brought to the Lord freewill offerings for all the work the Lord through Moses had commanded them to do.
He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.

Solitaire...simplicity...

Solitaire .....simplicity...

I have played to game, solitaire, for as long as I can remember, first with a deck of cards and  later with a computer...it is not an addiction, but a mind challenge like scrabble and I don't play it all the time...

As an only child, there was not always a playmate around to pass the time, so I had lots of games by myself.  Solitaire was one. I learned to play it in doubles as well with grandparents and others on cold, wet, rainy days where we lived..or warm late nights..a deck of cards went with us on trips or camp outs...we played canasta, rummy, war, fish, old maid, hearts, and pinnacle sometimes...I remember as a small child, my parents would bundle me up and we would visit their friends, we children played and then were put down to sleep, and they would play pinnacle long into the night, laughing, visiting as we children slept nearby.  A simple entertainment for all...those friends lasted a lifetime...

We taught and played games with our children as well, scrabble, monopoly, Chinese checkers, clue, uno, Dutch Blitz, phase 10, hi hi cheerio, battleship .....they learned to count, strategize, take turns, lose/win graciously and visit over those games...now my grandchildren are doing the same things...some games are easy to visit over and others are need concentration...whatever the mood fits...

Simple entertainment, learning from one another, and learning about one another as well...those who can lose graciously and ones who have to win ...those who play for fun and those who are out for "blood"... Those who are strategic and those  for the enjoyment of being around others...games can tell us a lot...

2 Samuel 11:1a In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king’s men and the whole Israelite army. .....

This verse has intrigued me...it is like a "game" of war.. They had a time for war..better weather, rested over the winter...whatever...they made it sound simple...something you played at..like our family games..but it wasn't ...is wasn't a social event or something to pass the time...or solitary...it had a purpose...

Thank YOU for the games we play, the simplicity of getting to know others with their games...their attitudes, Likes and disLikes...You are there with us, sharing life...

Long range....

Long range ....

Reading through 1 Samuel 1 and 2, after working on estate stuff, God just brought to mind thoughts of land range ripples, plans, that events trigger...

-A child with special needs bringing joy and closeness  to a dysfunctional family...

-A husband with addiction issues, bringing about an entire ministry to others with similar problems..

-a diving accident changing the life of a young woman who ministers to the world....

- support groups and people helping others because of a suicide  or war, or miscarriages, or overeating or alcoholism or etc, etc..etc...

- a police officer shot leads to counseling others with  like experiences...

-a short term mission leading to long term missions...

-abandonment leads to orphanage building...

-deaths of family members spurring on new visions, new ministries, new learning...

Hannah prayed for a son, but God was preparing a priest or leader...He saw and knew the long range ....

It just struck my heart, again, how God uses big and little events in our lives to further His Kingdom....we, hopefully, can look back on our lives and see the "when and thens"..." When  this happened , then this came about".

I had to weep and ask God, "what am I doing to enlarge His Kingdom? What is the long range? Am I missing something? Am I too caught up in the present that I cannot see the good for the future? What is God  using in my life effect His Kingdom? Am I doing what He has for me to do?

And I can see changes in my family after the deaths of their grandparents and father...their decision making is matured...their giving is amazing...our lives, even missing our loved ones, have changed and grown...our horizons have broadened...our faith has grown...Thank YOU, God for seeing the long range through pain and helping us to reach for You...

Terra cotta soldiers....

Terra cotta soldiers...

Yesterday I was reminded of a trip we were privileged to take several years ago to China...

One of the places we visited was the diggings and display of the terra cotta soldiers  in Xian, China. There were hundreds of living people viewing these silent clay soldiers guarding their emperor in the "afterlife". Each soldier was individually designed with their various field gear, hair styles depicting which rank or position they held in the army...standing row after silent row. Clay horses  stood at ready to carry or work their jobs as well..
There were so many, it was hard to take in, standing in formation under huge roofs built to cover these vast armies of quiet clay empty hearted men...

I don't ever expect these clay soldiers to come to life..nor have hearts of flesh..but they could if God so desires like the valley of dry bones in the book of Ezekiel.   But, it was such a good illustration of heart of stone...no feeling, no care, empty....not what God so desires of us, hearts filled with His love, His care, His Spirit....filled

thank YOU that you give us new hearts, written on with Your Spirit...not hardened, empty...

Ezekiel 11:19 I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone and give them a heart of flesh.

Ezekiel 36:26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.

2 Corinthians 3:3 You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

Ezekiel 37:1-14 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’” So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army. Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.
Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.
I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.’”

Staying young....

Staying young ....

I had just watched an advertisement for young looking skin...

Then turned to Jesus Calling for today...oh,,I love it when all the messages fit together...I have to chuckle at God's timing ...

October 20
I am your living God, far more abundantly alive than the most vivacious person you know. The human body is wonderfully crafted, but gravity and the inevitable effects of aging weigh it down. Even the most superb athlete cannot maintain his fitness over many decades. Lasting abundant life can be found in Me alone. Do not be anxious about the weakness of your body. Instead, view it as the prelude to My infusing energy into your being.
As you identify more and more fully with Me, My Life becomes increasingly intertwined with yours. Though the process of aging continues, inwardly you grow stronger with the passing years. Those who live close to Me develop an inner aliveness that makes them seem youthful in spite of their years. Let My Life shine through you, as you walk in the Light with Me.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
—Psalm 139:14

To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.
—Colossians 1:29

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
—1 John 1:7

It was like the doctor was reading the same lines, Gravity and aging....sagging skin, dry skin, wrinkles...as another birthday is fast approaching...rejuvenation...
But, the most important rejuvenation we need is on the inside, being renewed day by day...transformed to Christlikeness, with His light shining through  those wrinkles of age...not the puffiness of Botox , or the skin sculpture of the plastic surgeon..

Thank YOU that you are the sculpturer of our lives, with renewing every morning...help me to carry the shine of Your light to others...

Psalm 51:10, 12 Create in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Psalm 118:29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;his love endures forever.
Job 12:12 Is not wisdom found among the aged? Does not long life bring understanding?  (Oh, how I hope so)
Proverbs 16:31 The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. KJV
Proverbs 16:31 Gray hair is a crown of splendor; it is attained in the way of righteousness. NIV

Apples....

Apples In the Bible.....

I went to a Harvest festival this weekend with my oldest grand daughter...they had packing bins and packing bins filled with apples , pears, winter squash, gourds. Plus, plates filled with toothpicks, chunks of apples and pears to taste...with their appropriate labels..so one could purchase their favorite tastes, textures and uses...hummmmm good...I have never seen so many varieties of apples in my life...and so much difference in tastes...from crispy tart to soft sweet, from pure white to rosy pink....add to that. arts, jams, honeys, Jellies, wines, a food court with fresh salmon and live music...no corn maze or pumpkin chunking...

We chose a firm, crisp apple which lasts a while for her family and I got a small variety pack for myself...I was tempted by all those apples to go on and on...

I always picture Adam and Eve with large a apple in hand in the garden of Eden ....being tempted by the serpent,  shrewdly slithering around and around, tossing out tempting words, slyly grabbing their attention, deceiving their senses...until finally they succumb to his lies...similar to the wicked queen in Snow White, holding the beautiful, shiny Apple with her gnarled hand  close to Snow White's face shiny with purity and innocence...tempted....and won over....

But, it doesn't say "Apple " in Genesis. It says "fruit". A fruit they picked off of the tree in the middle of the garden, a tree of the knowledge of good and evil...tempted and won over ...and their eyes were opened from the innocence with which they were so gifted....and so goes the world from there...tempted again and again through the ages...by lies, deception and all the evil Satan can hand out...not an apple but a fruit of his nature...

Thank YOU that You have the final victory, God...the all powerful, the Almighty. Help me to overcome the temptations that are thrown out to make me stumble, question...

Verses containing "apple"

Song of Solomon 7:8

I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its fruit. Oh may your breasts be like clusters of the vine, and the scent of your breath like apples,

Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings,

Joel 1:12

The vine dries up; the fig tree languishes. Pomegranate, palm, and apple, all the trees of the field are dried up, and gladness dries up from the children of man.

Song of Solomon 8:5

Who is that coming up from the wilderness, leaning on her beloved? Under the apple tree I awakened you. There your mother was in labor with you; there she who bore you was in labor.

Confidentiality agreements...

Confidentiality agreements.....

Over the years, we have had to sign confidentiality agreements with various people and companies.   Just the other day, one came through .  These mean  that a person may look at our business data and promise that this data will not be shared or given out to anyone else..ever..unless there is an agreement to do so...

But there have been innumerable unsigned ones as well...working hurting women while I was in staff officially or unofficially, my children, friends, relatives, lawyers, other businesses, ....words spoken in confidence ....that should never leave my lips to another...I have been a "sounding board" in hundreds of confidences from dreams for the future to emotional and physical abuse, from childlessness to good or bad business deals....and I could not speak to anyone to "hash out" these ideas and pain...as they were given in confidence...to unburden myself, I had to lay them at the Saviour's feet, giving over the joy or the burdens to Him...he was and is my safe place,....my confident....and takes those joys or problems totally under consideration....

I have been pondering this again  and then this morning, these following words hit my mail, and the confidentiality agreements were in the mail as well,  a reminder that God is ever present, ever listening, ever comforting...ever walking beside me, with His comfort and protection, ever working.....in my life and others...

Thank YOU, for listening, for encouraging, for always be present....a whisper or thought away..knowing before I know my thoughts and path ....

Proverbs 11:13 A gossip betrays a confidence,but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.

Psalm 71:5 For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,my confidence since my youth.

Isaiah 55:8-9, 11 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
so is my word that goes out from my mouth:It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it...

"Where could I go"
Living below in this old sinful world
Hardly a comfort can afford
Striving alone to face temptations sore
Where could I go but to the Lord?

Where could I go? oh, where could I go>
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Where could I go but to the Lord?

Neighbors are kind, I love them everyone
We get along in sweet accord
But when my soul needs manna from above
Where could I go but to the lord?

Where could I go> oh, where could I go?
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Where could I go but to the Lord?

Life here is grand with friends I love so dear
Comfort I get from God's own Word
Yet when I face the chilling hand of death
Where could I go but to the Lord?

Where could I go? oh, where could I go?
Seeking a refuge for my soul
Needing a friend to save me in the end
Where could I go but to the Lord?

The words and music to "Where Could I Go But To The Lord?" are by J.B Coats.

Through The Valley

A daily devotion for October 18th

From your friends at RayStedman.org

Read: Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4).

This again is a very picturesque scene. The shepherd is leading the sheep back home at evening. As they go down through a narrow gorge, the long shadows lie across the trail. In the Hebrew this is a valley of deep shadows. The sheep, because they are so timid and defenseless, are frightened by their experience. But they trust the shepherd, and therefore they are comforted. They will fear no evil because the shepherd is with them. We are reminded of the Lord's words quoted in the book of Hebrews: Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Hence we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? (Hebrews 13:6). I do not know what your experience has been, but whenever I'm in a situation like this, when there is a great deal of pressure, I begin to wonder if the Lord hasn't abandoned me. But He says He never leaves us, never forsakes us. He is always there. Therefore, we have no reason to fear. That is a great comfort.
And then David writes, Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. The rod was a club that was used to drive off wild animals. It was never used on the sheep but was a heavy instrument used to protect the sheep from marauding predators. The staff was a slender pole with a little crook on the end that was used to aid the sheep. The crook could be hooked around the leg of a sheep to pull it from harm. Or it could be used as an instrument to direct, and occasionally to discipline, the sheep with taps on the side of the body.
Understanding how shepherds tend their sheep has helped me so much in understanding the character of God. When I go wandering away He doesn't say, There goes that stupid sheep, and--WHAP!--down comes that big club! No, His attitude is, How can I help My sheep? How can I move in to bring him back into line? How can I comfort him and supply what he needs? God may have to discipline, but He always does it in love. He reproves, corrects, encourages, and instructs in righteousness, dealing with us firmly and gently.
The rod and staff are also used against the two greatest enemies we have to face. The rod is for the enemy without, Satan, who is working through the world system to destroy us. Jesus said, He is a liar and a murderer. He's out to devour us, and so the Lord uses the club on him. But I am the other enemy, the enemy within. In the immortal words, We have met the enemy, and he is us. I know that. The shepherd's staff is used to chasten and subdue the enemy within. But the confidence He gives is that I have nothing to fear, neither from the enemy without or from the enemy within.
Lord, thank You for leading me through the dark valley, keeping me from harm as I go. Thank You even for Your reproof and correction, which is another expression of Your great love.

Life Application

The Good Shepherd surrounds His sheep with His constant presence. What are two evidences of His protecting love and His firm and gentle care for the sheep?
