Fall trip

Fall trip...collage...

Last fall, four of us took a trip along the eastern seaboard of the US...seems like eons ago.....
I started a little early and visited my son and his family in TN.  Then met another friend to go to a conference at Gettysburg.....have you ever watched the movie, Gettysburg?
It is well, worth it...standing the higher ground...and keeping the hill...

I asked God to show me a lesson each day and He did.   It was amazing...our family had gone through so many changes and I needed help and wisdom  for then and the days ahead....

Family....we were all grieving at different paces, different ways, just differently and we had and have to encourage one another as well as give space for that grieving....

Gettysburg....the whole battle it seemed was for a little hill, but the higher ground...standing firm in God's convictions, HIs word, no matter what...seeking that higher ground in our lives...seeking after God in all things...He is the higher ground....

From all these days of  learning, I put together this collage...some days had visual rememberences and others, did not...

The light house...there are two,, one a painting...reminded me of my mother, who loved to paint and taught painting until about two weeks before she passed away.  But a
Light house...we are to be beacons of light to show others the true light of
Christ.  Even when we don't want like being a beacon, we are...I didn't like grieving, I didn't like the situation,  but I was ....was I being a light?  Was I showing light to my family? Others? There are storms in life and we have a light to show us the way....

Shells, shells, shells, walking along any beach I could, picking up pieces of life...beach glass, battered, smooth, soft, not rough around the edges, colorful...God is shaping, softening, smoothing out the rough edges, even using the various colors, differences to be picked up by others and enjoyed...we all have a purpose, even broken...

The partially carved seahorse.....a man was sitting at a picnic table roughly carving driftwood that he had picked along the ocean...something's were finished and I asked him if he would sell the one on which he was working....sure,....it reminded me that God is still at work ....He is still carving, shaping my life to His specifications ....I am still u finished until such time that He takes me home...I am in the beach of life, waiting, being shaped by all the events that come...still a work in progress ......

Another day, we took a schooner, the captain explained about the raising of the sails and how they catch the wind....look up, it seemed to be saying , set your course,,,catch that wind of Gods word...for He is the captain, the wind, the course....

Further along on the trip, we were hut by a storm, icy, windy, gale force winds....couldn't see land, couldn't walk on the deck, had to hold onto walls to keep upright...reminded me of the disciples on the stormy sea...don't be afraid!!!! And we slept....sailing into the St. Laurence seaway....calmness ahead,....just waiting....

Finally coming to the end city....shining in the sunset...the windows reflecting the golden sunset...so sparkling .....glowing .....that we could hardly wait to see it...home port...castles...solid...prepared for us....

Lessons along the way....of the voyage, life,....all pointing toward
God....and his desire for us to learn of Him....

Thank you for the reminders, the voyages...life...when we look and ask, You show and answer....

Anticipation......

Anticipation ....

Yesterday I woke up to no water...

Now, I really like the convenience of running water....I admit that i am spoiled.  We have camped where there is no water, or been places in the world that water is a luxury, one such place used their water six times before it was thrown out.....they had to pay for a liter at a time .......

We here in America are blessed with usually clean, clear water which comes to us the moment we turn on the faucet.....so it comes as surprise when the the water doesn't come when we want it....there is no anticipation with water.....

This is the season of anticipation....Christmas....we long to put up our trees, purchase, wrap and open our presents.....listen to Christmas music....go to Christmas  bazaars....create gifts,...surprises......look at lights or light our own places...watch Christmas movies or specials....bake and eat cookies or special Christmas treats.....

Anticipation......

The world, over two thousand years ago was anticipating as well......some had no clue they were anticipating anything....but they were....wise men were watching stars for a sign that something spectacular was happening or happened...a culture/nation of people were waiting for a Saviour to come and rescue them from their oppressors, not realizing that this Saviour was coming not to put down the government but to rescue the world from sin....no matter what government....

This Saviour was coming to a particular family/lineage, to a particular town for a particular reason....salvation....God's promise fulfilled....the very Word himself....not in the form of a tremendous charismatic leader to sweep everyone off their feet but a servant to teach servant hood, a life style...salvation...

Anticipation....

A baby laid in a manger...whom the angels sang about, the shepherds sought, the parents loved, the king searched,  the wiseman came from afar, protected by dreams and direction,....prophesied /foretold.....the worlds' Saviour....Jesus Christ, God with us....

Thank YOU that you moved the world to have this baby, so special, to be born according to Your word....anticipated by the world...that we can, but ask and receive our much needed salvation, eternal life...that we have the recorded Word, the HOly Spirit, You as our Father....who knows us, loves us beyond measure....

Storm stories....

Storm stories.....

This morning this letter was among my inbox emails....from the organization, Walk Through the Bible.....what determination, faith...of our brothers and sisters in areas affected by various storms....I am sure we could hear similar stories of the victims of the tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, all over the world...some aren't alive here to tell their story...they didn't make it through the earthly disaster....but went Home instead....

The storms of our lives come in different shapes, sizes, events....wind, disease...water....people...other natural disasters ......they are traumatic, life changing.....mind altering......

They teach us different life lessons.....we pray for help, recovery...peace...and the answers come in different forms, some we want and others, not....we usually want it our way, wrapped up in a neat little package...

I know that God uses every life storm for our good, even though at the time we may not see it..and it may be a very long time before we see the good...there are events on my life, I am still looking for the good....but I cling to that promise....I don't see the whole picture.....like God....I just have to trust and love God, and hope.....

Jeremiah 29:11
New International Version (NIV)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Romans 8:28-29
New International Version (NIV)
28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

We Sang Hymns of Worship

A Story of Survival in the Philippines

Thank you for praying with us for our Walk Thru the Bible family in the Philippines. We are beyond grateful to know that our national director, Federico Primavera Tancongco (Fetan), and his family are safe. Fetan sent us this incredible story of survival several days after Typhoon Haiyan hit his home.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. There has always been this informal brotherhood between Filipinos and Americans. It comes up from time to time. The US government and US based NGOs were on the ground even before the typhoon hit.

The impact of the disaster is mind boggling. We are all waiting for news of our relatives some of whom just survived a 7.2 earthquake last month in Bohol.

I empathize with the victims. In 2009, when Typhoon Ondoy slammed into MetroManila, I had to leave my car in Makati and walk through 10km of waist deep and chest deep waters to get to my family. Our subdivision was already in neck deep waters and I had to climb up and through our second floor window. The storm was raging fast and I calculated that our three story townhouse would be underwater in three hours. We went to the roof to survey our options. We cut sheets of blanket to fashion rope to guide us across to a 5 story condominium on the other side of the street. We sang hymns of worship as we prepared the rope. The road we had to cross was a raging river of debris and floating trash. Before I crossed to tie the other end of the road to the condo building on the other side, we prayed and said good bye to each other and I told my kids that if I did not make it, never ever to blame God, that it doesn't matter how we die, each one is doorway to glory.

One by one I ferried my wife, Dell, three kids and two house helps at the very height of the storm in almost pitch black darkness, howling winds, and fighting the current, all the while afraid that cramps might overcome me after walking 10kms.

I had no idea that people from the all over our street and those trapped on the branches of a nearby mango tree were watching us as we crossed. After my family was safely across, someone shouted, "Attorney! please help us!" I fixed my flashlight where the voice was coming from, there were 15 people on the roof of a bungalow next to our townhouse. I swam back to transfer the other end of the rope to tie it closer to them. One by one I ferried my neighbors. By now the water was 16 feet deep and at the level of the electric wires. I used the rope to guide me as I swam backwards so as not to drink the floodwaters. When I was ferrying a pregnant woman a cockroach crawled up my face. I could not let go of the woman or of the rope and finish the job. Others called out to me. I had to give a hacksaw to a friend who was trapped by their iron grills at the second story of their house. (I keep tools and emergency equipment underneath our bed). A neighbor who had given birth 5 days earlier was trapped with them. They were able to cut themselves free. All told I ferried 25 of our neighbors. (Most manila dwellers do not know how to swim and were afraid to help. A retired military man got home from security guard work and was able to help me after the 21st save.) Because of adrenaline I did not realize that I had a lot of cuts from the debris that was hitting me. We all slept sitting in the staircase of the 5 story condo.

The storm stopped after four hours. Some 4 people died in the surrounding subdivision, mostly trapped inside homes.

When the water started to subside to 10 feet we returned home. My sister sent a rescue team. As Dell put on her shoe to leave with the rescuers, her foot felt something inside her shoe. She pulled out a sleeping live snake! she screamed and threw it across the room. In our trip out of the village my son's inflatable raft capsized but recovered.

A friend who was in New York lent their house to us. After getting dried up my sons went to the nearest church to help pack relief goods. All this time I saved my cell phone battery wrapped in vacuum packs and saving it to send text messages at top of the hour. I sent an email to our relatives in US, Canada and France to tell the whole story and to assure them that we were safe. Unknown to me one of my sisters shared my story with her news organization. The editor decided to people to vet the story. While I was at a hardware depot getting stuff to fix my house, I saw a magazine on the typhoon. I decided to get one for memento for my children. As I was reading it while lining up to pay. I saw our story. I called my sister to scold her. Looking back I shouldn't have. That story opened doors for me lead others to the Lord.

But, my experience is nothing compared to the stories we are getting because of Storm Yolanda .(Philippine name for the recent typhoon, which according to CNN was 3x the force of Typhoon Katrina.)

My family is volunteering to help Operation Blessing, a Christian relief organization, pack care packages.

We are tracking down WorldTeachers who may be affected. Communication and power is down.

Thank your government and your people for being always the first to assist us. Thank you for your prayers. Continue praying.

In His Grip, Always.

Headlines and humor .....

Headlines....and laughter

These were two headlines yesterday that caught my attention...just had to chuckle....

"Spotted frog meetings set"....I wondered how many would attend..or which of them could read about the meetings

"Snake river wolf pack near its limit of livestock attacks"....wondered if they knew the limit or who was counting....had there been a sign saying...".this your limit"....

Sometimes I feel guilty with laughter.....I don't mean any disrespect to anyone..should I be laughing so soon after deaths of loved ones....should I be in mourning all the time...and it feels good to laugh....there is a cleansing somehow to be able to laugh.....

Laughter is thought to be healthy and there are whole ways for its use in healing....

"laughter therapy, which relies on various techniques designed to produce laughter. Laughter is believed to be beneficial to patients because it reduces anxiety and stress, renders pain manageable and bolsters the immune system."

"Humor therapy" under the American Cancer society or books like "humor, the best medicine"

Readers digest has special issues  just for humor, pages for all kinds of humor....I remember getting the magazine and going directly to those pages....(my grandmother always went to the word meanings pages first)

There are comedy shows on TV...YouTube....night clubs....we went to one in Hawaii...a family place with comedy magicians......so good....good for the heart and soul....comic pages in the newspapers......comic books...

And there are times when laughter is inappropriate.....foolish laughter....but I am talking about fun laughter ....at the right times about the right things....,

I know that both my dad and my husband loved laughter...they could tell good stories, loved fun...there are times, I wish I share a funny story with them, am caught, realizing I can't .....but then think....they would have  loved it anyway...and laughed as well....so it is okay to laugh, neither one would begrudge the humor or the laughter...they enjoyed life....

Thank YOU for laughter at the right times, at the right things....you have given us emotions and You even laugh, the Bible says...and I know You must have a sense of humor for all the things You see, and hear us do...

Luke 6:21
Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh

Ecclesiastes 10:19a
A feast is made for laughter, .....

Genesis 21:6
Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”

Job 8:21
He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.

Job 39:18
Yet when she spreads her feathers to run, she laughs at horse and rider.

(Even this verse in Job 39...it is about ostriches....they are not too smart, but they can run fast)

Psalm 126:2
Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

Proverbs 14:13
Even in laughter the heart may ache, and rejoicing may end in grief.

Proverbs 31:25
She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.

Ecclesiastes 3:4
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Baby laughter....

Happy., happy, .....

Happy people....

Night night I was looking for a particular thing I had filed when all of the sudden this article popped out, demanding attention...the shorter version is found at the following site.  But then, as usual, I had to find a longer version...so both are given....

It just struck me, and I could find scripture to back each idea, the gospels, the epistles, both the  old and new testaments have verses that say this...
Be content, give thanks, do all things to God's glory, think on these things...don't compare, stop grumbling/complaining, cultivate the fruit of the Spirit, strive for the goal, the highest calling, love one another....love God....bear with one another .....think on these things....

No, these ideas, ways of life are not an easy fix..we have all through times of utter despair and they can come in a blink of an eye...tears at a word....heart wrenching times that we find ourselves in the deepest of a pit...either sitting there or trying to claw our way out inch by inch...only to look upward and finding the lifeline that God has thrown or His hand imploring us to take it....

We want a happy, happy happy life as Phil on Duck Dynasty calls it...

So, sorry this came from a secular source, but the implications are sooooo applicable to our everyday life in Christ....

Thank YOU, that you can speak us to anyway You desire, through the wind, a donkey, another person.  You so desire that we see You in all that is around us...and learn from your Word....you have given us the paths of life...

12 Things Happy People Do Differently
By Jacob Sokol Thursday, January 19, 2012

Most Popular - ..............

Express gratitude. – When you appreciate what you have, what you have appreciates in value.  Kinda cool right?  So basically, being grateful for the goodness that is already evident in your life will bring you a deeper sense of happiness.  And that’s without having to go out and buy anything.  It makes sense.  We’re gonna have a hard time ever being happy if we aren’t thankful for what we already have.

Cultivate optimism. – Winners have the ability to manufacture their own optimism.  No matter what the situation, the successful diva is the chick who will always find a way to put an optimistic spin on it.  She knows failure only as an opportunity to grow and learn a new lesson from life.  People who think optimistically tend to see the world as a place packed with endless opportunities, especially in trying times.

Avoid over-thinking and social comparison. – Comparing yourself to someone else can be poisonous.  If we’re somehow ‘better’ than the person that we’re comparing ourselves to, it gives us an unhealthy sense of superiority.  Our ego inflates – KABOOM – our inner Kanye West comes out!  If we’re ‘worse’ than the person that we’re comparing ourselves to, we usually discredit the hard work that we’ve done and dismiss all the progress that we’ve made.  What I’ve found is that the majority of the time this type of social comparison doesn’t stem from a healthy place.  If you feel called to compare yourself to something, compare yourself to an earlier version of yourself.

Practice acts of kindness. – Performing an act of kindness releases serotonin in your brain.  (Serotonin is a substance that has TREMENDOUS health benefits, including making us feel more blissful.)  Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good inside.  What’s even cooler about this kindness kick is that not only will you feel better, but so will people watching the act of kindness.  How extraordinary is that?  Bystanders will be blessed with a release of serotonin just by watching what’s going on.  A side note is that the job of most anti-depressants is to release more serotonin.  Move over Pfizer, .....

Nurture social relationships. – The happiest people on the planet are the ones who have deep, meaningful relationships.  Did you know studies show that people’s mortality rates are DOUBLED when they’re lonely?  WHOA!  There’s a warm fuzzy feeling that comes from having an active circle of good friends who you can share your experiences with.  We feel connected and a part of something more meaningful than our lonesome existence.

Develop strategies for coping. – How you respond to the ‘craptastic’ moments is what shapes your character.  Sometimes crap happens – it’s inevitable.  Forrest Gump knows the deal.  It can be hard to come up with creative solutions in the moment when manure is making its way up toward the fan.  It helps to have healthy strategies for coping pre-rehearsed, on-call, and in your arsenal at your disposal.

Learn to forgive. – Harboring feelings of hatred is horrible for your well-being.  You see, your mind doesn’t know the difference between past and present emotion.  When you ‘hate’ someone, and you’re continuously thinking about it, those negative emotions are eating away at your immune system.  You put yourself in a state of suckerism (technical term) and it stays with you throughout your day.

Increase flow experiences. – Flow is a state in which it feels like time stands still.  It’s when you’re so focused on what you’re doing that you become one with the task.  Action and awareness are merged.  You’re not hungry, sleepy, or emotional.  You’re just completely engaged in the activity that you’re doing.  Nothing is distracting you or competing for your focus when you are passionately engaged in something.

Savor life’s joys. – Deep happiness cannot exist without slowing down to enjoy the joy.  It’s easy in a world of wild stimuli and omnipresent movement to forget to embrace life’s enjoyable experiences.  When we neglect to appreciate, we rob the moment of its magic.  It’s the simple things in life that can be the most rewarding if we remember to fully experience them.

Commit to your goals. – Being wholeheartedly dedicated to doing something comes fully-equipped with an ineffable force.  Magical things start happening when we commit ourselves to doing whatever it takes to get somewhere.  When you’re fully committed to doing something, you have no choice but to do that thing.  Counter-intuitively, having no option – where you can’t change your mind – subconsciously makes humans happier because they know part of their purpose.

Practice spirituality. – When we practice spirituality or religion, we recognize that life is bigger than us.  We surrender the silly idea that we are the mightiest thing ever.  It enables us to connect to the source of all creation and embrace a connectedness with everything that exists.  Some of the most accomplished people I know feel that they’re here doing work they’re “called to do.”

Take care of your body. – Taking care of your body is crucial to being the happiest person you can be.  If you don’t have your physical energy in good shape, then your mental energy (your focus), your emotional energy (your feelings), and your spiritual energy (your purpose) will all be negatively affected.  Did you know that studies conducted on people who were clinically depressed showed that consistent exercise raises happiness levels just as much as Zoloft?  Not only that, but here’s the double whammy… Six months later, the people who participated in exercise were less likely to relapse because they had a higher sense of self-accomplishment and self-worth.....

The river path...

Walk along the river.....

There is a wonderful walkway along the Deshutes....

I took my dog there the other day, as I was down that way and the weather hadn't changed for the promised cold yet. Lots of dog walkers, families out for a stroll or jog...

Along the paved pathway are pillars about three feet tall. Some have plaques on them and others are , not.   I had never really paid any attention to them be fore, so stopped to see what they said...each was dedicated a person or family either in memorial or in name for who they were or what they had accomplished...either in the past or present....

There were construction workers, business builders, foresters, city founders, conservationists, family names, loggers,  .....some with a motto, some not....legacies.....

It just reminded me of the tombstones at the cemetery.   I have read lots of those in the past few years...historic older ones in Alaska, Canada, the Titanic, California, family ones.....even designed one and finished one....remembrances......messages to those who come later....

In starting to reread the book of Job, what would his epitaph be?   Or Paul's,Timothy's, David's, ......persevered., a man after God's heart....young...long life....

What do I want?  What will my family remember me by?  Scared....angry....loving ...antagonist....peace desirer...care taker....observer.......can't walk the talk.....I don't know...

Thank YOU for the  reminders that You are the blessed controller of all things. help me to observe, live a life worthy of Your calling...

Show me Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths.
—Psalm 25:4 nkjv

Divine Limitation
Daily Devotion for December 2
From the Writings of Ray Stedman

Read the Scripture: Job 2:1-8

But stretch out your hand and strike his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse you to your face. The LORD said to Satan, Very well, then, he is in your hands; but you must spare his life (Job 2:5-6).

Once again there is a divine limitation to Satan's power, but this time God moves the boundaries closer. He says, You can touch him. In fact, when Satan uses the phrase, strike his flesh and bones, he asks for access to the total humanity of Job. We still use that phrase today to speak of the totality of our humanity—not only our physical body but also our emotional life, our conscious and subconscious thinking and reacting, and our soul and spirit. Satan is asking for access to Job to touch him in body, soul, and spirit—and he proceeds in that order. He thinks that if he can get at Job in every part of his being, he can shake Job's faith and cause him to turn from his trust and confidence in God and curse Him to His face.

Once when I finished preaching a message on the first chapter of Job, two young men came up and challenged me. They would not accept the story of Job as an historical event, and they could not believe there ever was a man named Job who endured so many trials. I asked them why not. Their reply was, If that story is true, then God is unconcerned about human life. It pictures God as ruthless. Job's whole family was taken from him. We can't accept this as historical record. In talking with them, I realized that they were struggling with the same feelings that many people struggle with today. They see God as nothing more than a being who thinks and acts and has no more rights than a man. They thought that if a man dealt with another person as God dealt with Job, he would be justifiably charged with murder and cruelty. It did not occur to them that God could not be charged with these things, because in His hand is all of life. He determines the length of life for everyone.

That is why we have the book of Job, to show us that there are reasons for and purposes in these trials and sufferings that we do not see. Job could not see what was going on behind the scenes, and neither can we. And yet God knows. He has a purpose, and it is a proper and right purpose that will end up manifesting more fully the love and compassion of His heart. The test of every trial is always to this end.

Father, I see something of the pain and tears with which life can confront me, yet I will still be in Your will and Your hand, guarded and guided by Your love.

Life Application: Sometimes the pressures of life threaten to crush us. Are we willing to let God be God? Are we learning to trust in His perfect will and timeless wisdom?

Related Message: This daily devotion was inspired by one of Ray's messages. Please read "The Pressure of Pain" or listen to Ray for more on this portion of scripture.

Arranged marriages....?

Arranged marriages....?

46 years ago,my husband and I met for the first time...on this date.....

our college was having yet another "get to meet others event". This time it was a computer date....can you imagine.   We filled out these questionnaires, handed them into a central place and waited.   I talked everyone into on my floor...I cannot even imagine doing this now...but it was something I felt compelled to do...the guys were given the residence numbers, no names and were to pick up their dates with a corresponding number.   There was a dance at the student union to get aquatinted...he checked in at the residence hall desk and had me paged....the last date to show up for the entire floor, by the way...we met in the foyer of the hall, walked the short distance to the student union, walked through and went instead to the coffee shop and talked for rest of the evening...

Later, we both concurred that since we both had put Alaska as a point of travel...that is what the computer decided was the matching point.......

After that evening was over, I heard renditions of others' first dates.  All were nice, but no one dated that person again except us...and we were married over a year later...we had more in common than Alaska.....

We all meet our mates different ways, somehow arranged by Himself, if we follow His leading....in a parking lot, at a friends, at church, online, at work, a myriad of ways...there is something that draws us together and voila...marriage...

God especially designed Eve for Adam, Rebekah for Isaac, Sarah for Abraham, Ruth for Boaz, .....Mary for Joseph....Elizabeth for Zachariah ....

Us for Him, as a bride, the church for himself...

We all have the opportunity to work through marriage, it isn't always the easiest in the best of times...just as we are going through life, being prepared to be the bride of the Lamb...there are times of testings....times of per joy....anger,...repentance, forgiveness, learning...adjustments to marriage...both in our person to person marriages and our lives in Christ...

I want to thank YOU, for the husband You especially prepared for me....our marriage, our lives together, our journeys...our ups and downs...I wouldn't trade those years ....drawing closer to one another and to You....

Genesis 2:18 The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

The book of Ruth

Genesis 24:12 Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

Luke 1:5, 27
[ The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold ] In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.
27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
