Let's go....
My small group has been doing a short study on Mark 4:35-41... My
Bible already has notes and dates written next to this passage of times when these verses were "illuminated" and went with life experiences...storms, decisions, going to other side, faith, lack of faith, fears, questions, peace or lack of.....and they came back to, "who is this?" , can I trust the one who calms the seas, who made the seas, where was my faith, what are my fears, were my fears ruling my life....various lessons on the same passage...
These disciples were in the boat with the creator of the waters...fearing for their lives in the fury of squall...I have been there...wondering, "is God asleep while I am bailing water, trying not to drown in the storms of life". And He has asked the same of me, "why are you so afraid, do you still have no faith?" A rebuke to my soul after see how much He has supplied or carried me through previous life experiences...
But, truthfully, I don't like storms...I want calmness all the time...but that isn't as faith building ...there is a time for both...and God is there in each...building, encouraging, admonishing ....loving...thank YOU...
That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
Mark 4:35-41
He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Psalm 107:29-30
The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
Psalm 29:3
And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:9-10
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deep into storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere him. For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.
Psalm 33:6-9
