Firstborn….
A long time ago, when my oldest was just learning to reach and grab…he was sitting on my husband’s lap during church…my husband had his Bible opened to Luke 2. Our son grabbed a page a ripped it with his tiny little hand…it was the portion Luke 2:23 about firstborn….how appropriate…we carefully pried his little fingers off the paper, and later taped the page back together…
But, we kept that in our hearts…our firstborn “acknowledging “ his place in our family…
Actually, we have three firstborns in our family of four children…because of adoptions…and I have always thought of them as being consecrated to the Lord…as well as our second born…all were dedicated to Him at early ages…all were and are amazing gifts and additions to our family ….so grateful for their lives…
The Lord said to Moses, “Consecrate to me all the firstborn. Whatever is the first to open the womb among the people of Israel, both of man and of beast, is mine.”
you shall set apart to the Lord all that first opens the womb.….Every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.
Exod.13.1-2, Exod.13.12a,Exod.13.13b
(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”)
Luke.2.23
I pulled the following from “got questions”….
“The New Testament describes Christ as the “firstborn” several times. In an earthly sense, Jesus is Mary’s firstborn son (Luke 2:7), and He was dedicated according to the law (Luke 2:22–24). Spiritually, Jesus is the “firstborn among many brothers and sisters” in the body of Christ (Romans 8:29). In Colossians 1:15, the apostle Paul writes, “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.” This use of the title firstborn for Christ echoes the wording of Psalm 89:27–29, where God says of King David, “And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.”

We have earthly firstborns, but we serve and are saved by a “Firstborn”….by his blood we are saved….
and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood…
