Bio of Tim Conway.....

I started reading a biography of Tim Conway. In the Preface, the author stated that he was "genuine", "a gentleman", "cheerful", and didn't put others down to make a joke..

I found that interesting...having remembered him in movies with Don Knox...we didn't get the Carol Burnett show, in which he played...you can still get Youtube of select vignettes...of some of his comedy...laughter is good...

When I started reading my devotionals this am, the message was similar..."who do we look to for an example" or "what kind of example am I"...

What do I look to others to emulate?  How can I be a good example to family, friends, anyone....? What are my attitudes, my words, my actions?  Are they worthy of a child of the King of Kings?

 A long time ago, for Mother's Day , one of my children gave me the recording of "You are my Hero". We cried together..I still cry when I hear the song...we were going through some rough times....we don't start out desiring to be heroes...we live life....hopefully Godly lives before others...but focusing on the true Light, Example of Christ...

I look at my children now, living their lives before others, their children...and I see so much growth, caring, the Holy Spirit working in each....what a delight !!!!

thank YOU for the Example, but also for the life changing Gift of Yourself  in me, my family, my friends, those whose lives I bump into everyday...May they see YOU in me....for Your life changing gift....

Rely on Him to empower you to live an authentically righteous life before your children. When you seek Christ daily through prayer and His Word, you will change and be strengthened. Read the Scripture: Acts 3:1-10

Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, Look at us! Acts 3:4

Here was this man waiting at the gate of the temple. The striking thing about this is that when he asked alms of Peter, Peter stopped, and said to him, Look at us. This is very important, because it is right in line with the activities of Jesus whenever he wanted to heal anyone. He never walked up to someone and merely touched him and healed him, without first directing his attention to himself. He always captivated the attention of the individuals he wanted to heal, directed them to focus their gaze upon him. The reason is that this arouses a sense of expectation. It always quickens faith. This is what happened here. This man expected to receive something from Peter and John. He did not know what he was going to get, but his faith was quickened by Peter's words. This is very necessary in order to receive anything from God. You must expect something from him.

One of the reasons why there are people who attend church but whose lives are hardly any different than when they first came, is that they have never given their attention to God. They have never expected to receive anything when they came. Unfortunately there are those, young and old alike, who turn off their minds when they get into a church service. They start thinking of all kinds of other things, start taking mental trips and playing mental games. I have always thought it would be most interesting after service to know where everyone had been! But unfortunately, the life-changing truth that goes out from the Scriptures misses them, passes right by, and they can sit here for years and never be changed.

There are young people who have been raised in church, but who are no different, exhibit no evidence that God is at work. This is largely because they never have heard that word, Look at me, and paid attention. This is why Jesus always said to the crowds to which he preached, He who has ears, let him hear... (Matthew 11:15) Let him listen. This is always necessary for the working of faith.

The minute Peter had this man's attention, he did two things which are most interesting: First, he admitted his bankruptcy in the material realm: Silver or gold I do not have, he said. That's what you are looking for, but I can't help you there. He then demonstrated his amazing adequacy in the spiritual realm: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. In that electric moment, as this man was looking at Peter and John, and heard these words, at the mention of the name of Jesus something remarkable happened. Strength came flowing into his ankles, and Peter, sensing it, took him by the right hand and lifted him up. The man rose and began to leap and shout and jump around, trying out this new found strength in his legs which he had never known, because he was lame from birth.

Father, thank you for the name of Jesus. It has lost none of its power. It is still transforming men and women, as it always has — and not only spiritually, but occasionally physically. Thank you for those demonstrations of your power yet today. We know that you can change a sick and ailing body and make it well. But also you can take a sick and ailing spirit and make it whole.

Life Application: When people look at us are they drawn to the power and presence of the Lord Jesus Christ? Do we purposefully divert their attention and expectation from us to Him?

Lost keys.....

Lost things.....

The humorous joke at the end of this writing struck me this morning....lost keys....
About 90% of the mornings all of our married life, my husband hunted for his keys...we tried special places to put them.....key racks .....baskets,...etc, etc, etc...with no success....he would breeze into our home, put them down and go on with life....and then hunt for them the next morning....they could  be anywhere, the truck, pockets, pants, briefcase, dresser, desk,  on the floor next to the door, in the garage, night stand.....you name it...somewhere....and each morning was a repeat of the last, hunting for keys....funny little memories....I wonder what he would have written about my idiosyncrasies...

Lostness.....and being found....we fit into that category....i am like those lost  sheep...needing a shepherd...we all do...I am so glad that
God knows where we are, knows our needs all the time, and searches for us when we have wondered off....pursuing...seeking...not forgotten... Then shepherds us into the flock...binds up our wounds....strengthens,.....Rejoices over our return .....our  homecoming....

thank YOU, that you seek us when we are lost or have gone astray....You rejoice ....over me...You shepherd, comfort, care for,....me....that is so beyond comprehension....that each of us is so valuable to You, the Creator of the universe...

A little humor-"The Lost Keys...
After a meeting several days ago, I couldn't find my keys.

I quickly gave myself a personal "TSA Pat Down."
They weren't in my pockets.

Suddenly I realized I must have left them in the car.  Frantically, I headed for the parking lot.   My husband has scolded me many times for leaving my keys in the car's ignition.

   He's afraid that the car could be stolen.   As I looked around the parking lot, I realized he was right.   The parking lot was empty. I immediately called the police. I gave them my location, confessed that I had left my keys in the car, and that it had been stolen.

Then I made the most difficult call of all to my husband:

"I left my keys in the car and it's been stolen."

There was a moment of silence. I thought the call had been disconnected, but then I heard his voice."Are you kidding me?" he barked, "I dropped you off!"

Now it was my turn to be silent.

 Embarrassed, I said, "Well, come and get me."

He retorted, "I will, as soon as I convince this cop that I didn't steal your car!" Welcome to the golden years.............."

Checklists.....

Check lists.....

I was awake, working on lists, last night of things I "need" to get done...check on, check off, etc. etc. etc....then I woke up to this devo from Jesus Calling....had to chuckle...again at reminders that checklists needn't run my life....I need them to remember, but not control....

Thank YOU for Your reminders even before I knew that I needed them....You know me so well....

Jesus calling---May 6

Do not search for security in the world you inhabit. You tend to make mental checklists of things you need to do in order to gain control of your life. If only you could check everything off your list, you could relax and be at peace. But the more you work to accomplish that goal, the more things crop up on your list. The harder you try, the more frustrated you become.

There is a better way to find security in this life. Instead of scrutinizing your checklist, focus your attention on My Presence with you. This continual contact with Me will keep you in My Peace. Moreover, I will help you sort out what is important and what is not, what needs to be done now and what does not. Fix your eyes not on what is seen (your circumstances), but on what is unseen (My Presence).

You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.

Fields of lambs....

Driving so much these last few weeks, seeing spring emerge  from the cold winter snows and rains has been fun, the flowers, the trees, and the animals...new gangly colts,  baby calves snuggled into the hay tossed by the ranchers...new lambs galloping in groups around the fields....baby goats playing king of the mountain....baby ducks swimming in formation in the various pools at Disneyland ....baby chicks, turkeys, quail at the local feed store....

When our children were little, we would make the yearly trek out into the country to see these spring time sights...and then we lived in the country and had our own menagerie to watch and care for...one of the cutest was a family of baby skunks ....the mother took the lead, followed by four tiny ones, about the size of a baseball, all with their tails straight up in the air with a tiny kink backward at the top, walking down the country road....we kept our distance on that group!!  Fawns hidden in the bushes by their mothers, bunnies hopping around or baby killdeer, looking like walking cotton balls on toothpicks...

It is all such a reminder that there is life after winter, joy after night, new beginnings...that life goes on...seasons for everything....thank YOU for new life.....

Travel trailers...

Travel trailers....

This weekend  I had the opportunity and privilege to visit with friends and stay in their travel trailer...what memories came flooding into my mind....

We bought our first travel trailer when our oldest daughter was 9 months old to live in at a geology camp in NV....we had previously lived in a company one for summer jobs before children.

But our first purchased one was 19 feet long,with an open floor plan in the front and a full sized bed in the back with a separate entrance. The front had a table with a bunk overhead, small kitchen and bath facing one another....We actually lived in this miniature home on wheels for 1 1/2 years and then travelled in it for several years following....

I totally enjoyed it,....cleaning the floors took less that 5 minutes....no one could complain about "their room" as it was "our room"...my daughter learned to walk in it...I made children's clothes in the portable sewing area, ...kindergarten for our oldest.....everything was usually easily fixed,....no yard work...easily movable.....we camped in parks with lots of play room and / or a swimming pool.....we made memories...

After living in it, we travelled in it...the worlds fair in Vancouver, BC....across the United States  and back..50 wedding anniversaries, family gatherings, various geology jobs...even spending Christmas  with a garland shaped tree taped to the wall...it housed others as well....visitors, a family looking for a home...

Its final trip with our family was to Southern California to a "dude" ranch for employee housing....and there it stayed...

It gave us a place to lay our heads for years, to gather as a family in wonderfully "cramped " quarters....we did school work, played games, read bedtime stories,  prepared lots of family and company meals...

Abraham moved his family from place to place with tents and animals...

Moses moved the Israelite nation, following a cloud by night, fire by night...around the desert regions in the Middle East .....

They carried their belongings with them....in a different way than we did, but the same concept....they lived as they travelled, they made memories as well, their children grew up and learned .....they cleaned their tents, arranging to make it more habitable....their children's play areas, vast as well....

Learning contentment  along the way...living life...purpose....

Jesus went from town to town, preaching, teaching , discipling,,. And said He had "nowhere to lay His head"... No miniature home on wheels...we at least had a bad and pillow...

Colossians 4:10 I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it.  11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Notes-life application Bible-4:10-14 Are you able to get along happily (be content) in any circumstances you face? Paul knew how to be satisfied whether he had plenty or whether he was in need. The secret was drawing on Christ’s power for strength. Do you have great needs, or are you dissatisfied because you don’t have what you want? Learn to rely on God’s promises and Christ’s power to help you be content. If you always want more, ask God to remove that desire and teach you how to be satisfied in every circumstance. He will supply all your needs, but in a way that he knows is best for you.

The News....

The News....

Every morning I open to the news to see what is happening in the world and nation...I am hard pressed to find something positive....

Then in the mail, I receive letters from various missionaries and organizations which are filled with praise for the work done throughout the world that is so positive...these things are not nearly as headline news in the world but causes rejoicing amongst the angels as people are coming to know The Lord...

The world order versus God's world...good versus evil.....acts of the flesh versus the fruit of the Spirit....a stark contrast....around us...on the personal, regional, national and world level...all affect us daily, but we can choose where we want to put our trust, our energy...

There are those who stand for God in all arenas and they need the prayers of the saints, worldwide...we have opportunities to make that stand as well.....do we stand for the flesh or the Spirit????

thank YOU for Your Word, help me to display Your fruit rather than the fleshly side of life....Help our leaders to make right decisions....not to be drawn into the their own fleshly desires....

Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

"Your Heart's Fertile Ground

Attitudes that Promote Growth

You've likely seen books and articles that list the habits, attitudes, and practices of successful people and businesses. They can be great helps at identifying the core characteristics of people who excel in some area of life.

Have you ever thought about the common habits, attitudes, and practices of people who have rich, thriving spiritual lives? Can we also discover core characteristics of people who grow consistently? Some people would say "yes" and then jump immediately into a list of practices like daily prayer, Scripture study, and other such disciplines. I certainly won't knock those practices, but I've known people who do them regularly and never experience a changed heart. (Jesus noticed the same about some religious leaders in His time). Why aren't those practices the foolproof keys to growth? Because there's a deeper layer of attitudes that will either enhance our progress or limit it.

I've noticed some almost universal characteristics among those who grow spiritually, so I'm adding to the many lists of "here's what successful people do." Even in spiritual matters, growth doesn't happen by accident. Based on what I've observed, if you want your inner life to flourish, here's what it will take:

1. Ask God. Goes without saying? You might think so, but it's really easy to forget this. The first answer to every spiritual issue (or really every issue, period) is simply to ask God. It's His process, not yours. You may not realize how it's happening—or even that it is—but you'll look back at some point and realize how far you've come. He has a way of getting us from point A to point B without our being able to define how it happened. Ask Him to be the "general contractor" for your internal renovation. It then officially becomes His responsibility to accomplish it. And He's really good at it.

2. Want it. To a very large degree, you'll be defined by your hungers in life. Whatever you're desperate for will shape you because that's the direction you'll grow. If you're really hungry for spiritual depth, you'll inevitably find it. Or, as Jesus said, you'll be blessed (Matthew 5:6).

3. Let go of expectations. How rigid are you? Many people seek spiritual growth within limits. They don't express their boundaries and may not even be aware of them. They want to layer their growth on top of what they already "know" to be true. But what if what they know isn't as certain as they think? They will be laying new growth on top of a faulty foundation.

In order to grow, you have to be willing to let your foundations be shaken. Spiritual growth rarely comes without some kind of paradigm shift. Most people who have experienced a season of accelerated growth say something like, "I was 100 percent convinced of (whatever their pet doctrine was), but God rearranged my thinking." When you ask God for new insights, you have to be willing to let go of some old ones.

4. Be open to shifting circumstances. Are you okay with earthquakes? God often changes our external circumstances to prompt changes in internal attitudes. Our surface desires open a window into our deeper desires, and deep desires turn our focus to God like nothing else. That focus is vital for growth. But our focus never gets off of ourselves if we're fighting against the changes in our lives. Which leads to ...

5. Ask good questions. "God, why are You doing this to me?" is not a good question. It's self-focused and obsessed with escaping whatever crisis we're in. It's also an implied accusation. Here's a better question: "What do You want to reveal about Yourself in this situation?" Or another: "What are You teaching me in this?" These aren't accusations; they are trust-based requests for understanding. When we ask them, entire vistas of understanding open up before us.

6. Flip the switch. Most of us are like spiritual vacuums, always trying to consume whatever gets within range of our hunger. We're on a desperate search for fulfillment, and we'll grab anything—relationships, careers, knowledge, accomplishments, possessions, power—to get it. This is what Jesus called "seeking to save your life," and it leads to losing it, inevitably in the form of futility and frustration. What's the alternative? Lose your life intentionally. Flip a switch from "intake" to "outflow" so you're always pouring into God and others. Paradoxically, this leads to getting the life you were once desperately trying to grab in other ways. An outward focus results in rapidly accelerated spiritual growth.

7. See your spiritual life as an adventure. Too many people see it as an obligation. Or constantly feel the pressure to "get it right." It's true that the door to the kingdom is narrow, but once you've entered the gate, there are vast pastures and forests to explore. Run wild. Like a father watching his child learn to walk, God is fine with mistakes. Three steps and a fall get shouts of delight, not a rebuke for failure. It's all part of the learning process. In the parable of the talents, those who took risks were commended; the one too conservative to lay it on the line lost everything. If you want to grow, you have to know the heart of the Father well enough to know He isn't worried about you stumbling in the process. He wants you to go for it anyway.

In Scripture, people who grew spiritually did so because they opened up to new possibilities. Sometimes they didn't open up willingly; adversity or divine intervention (or both) forced them to. But it doesn't have to be that way. We can ask, seek, and knock—and be willing for God to answer however He wants to. When He does, hearts change. And we grow like never before.
