Self control….
Self-control….
We are just reading a chapter on self- control in Bible study…so I thought I would just look up all verses on self-control…
The song included was what set off this journey this a.m….we have the victory through Christ, but I, for one, don’t hold on to that fact as much as I should…I try and try in my own “power”…before finally laying it at Jesus’ feet and acknowledging that I don’t have the “power”…only He does…
Thank YOU…..
A man without self-controlis like a city broken into and left without walls.
Prov.25.28
After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, and he sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. And as he reasoned about righteousness and self-control and the coming judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, “Go away for the present. When I get an opportunity I will summon you.”
Acts.24:24-25
Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
1Cor.7.5, 9
Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
1Cor.9.25
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Gal.5.22-24
likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
1Tim.2.9,1Tim.2.15,1Tim.3.2
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.
2Tim.1.7,2Tim.3.2,2Tim.3.3-5
For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves too much wine.
They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
Titus.1.7,Titus.1.8,Titus.1.9,Titus.2.2,Titus.2.3,Titus.2.4,Titus.2.5,Titus.2.6,Titus.2.11,Titus.2.12,Titus.2.13,Titus.2.14
Thought of this psalm…it speaks as much to me now as it did the Israelites long ago…
“I relieved your shoulder of the burden;your hands were freed from the basket.
In distress you called, and I delivered you;
I answered you in the secret place of thunder;
I tested you at the waters of Meribah.
Selah “But my people did not listen to my voice;Israel would not submit to me.
So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts,to follow their own counsels.
Oh, that my people would listen to me,that Israel would walk in my ways!
I would soon subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes.

“As usual “
“As usual “
At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed.
Acts.14.1
Paul faithfully gave out the Word…his “as usual “ found him winning others to Christ…
Those two words caught me yesterday and again this morning….
“Creatures of habit”, “faithfully”, “ you can count on it”….other similar phrases…
There are only a few other places in Scriptures that uses “ as usual “…and I thought they were kind of interesting…
1. As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it. 1Sam.17.23
Goliath’s usual taunting of others…his “bragging “ right so to speak…and the phrase, “and David heard it”…leaves one lingering on, “what will David do?”… and we know from the Scripture’s record. He defied Goliath with pebbles and more importantly, God on his side…
2. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. 1Sam.18.10
David faithfully played the lyre to sooth Saul’s emotions…probably playing music that he played to his Lord…I wonder if those songs later accompanied his many Psalms…
3. “As for you, son of man, your people are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, ‘Come and hear the message that has come from the Lord.’ My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to hear your words, but they do not put them into practice. Their mouths speak of love, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice. Ezek.33.30-32
This one was a sad commentary…Ezekiel was called as a watchman…he spoke and people heard, but they did not want to put his words in to practice…they went about their merry way after hearing truth…like the sower’s seed …
The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.
Matt.13.20-21
4. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. Mark.15.8
Was Pilate’s “as usual “ bending to the people? Was he predictably giving in to others to appease them?
5. Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. Luke.22.39-44
This was my favorite…Jesus prayed “as usual”….in this instance he was praying before his arrest, crucifixion and resurrection…his agony apparent…but we know he prayed, as usual…for his disciples…for us…in John 17..
His “as usual” was an open conversation with God that we too can enjoy…
Thank YOU…

And so many more on YouTube….
We have some amazing Christian songwriters and singers still adding to songs of praise and wonder… or the hymn writers of old…
Their songs touch our hearts and souls deeply giving us pause to praise, pray, meditate, listen in contemplation, or sing along with hands raised or lowered…in worship…
When my husband was going through his cancer, I asked God to give me songs…sometimes they were great hymns, sometimes praise songs…all sung to my heart…
The songs can get us through difficult times, great times…
There are songs throughout Scripture which told of great events…people who sang them facing or having faced life…and their hearts were moved to sing…
thank YOU….
Blessings…
