Be angry and do not sin…
When I was reading 1 Samuel 25, I thought about entitlement…both on David’s side and Nabel’s…both felt they were entitled to something…but, another lesson is really about revenge and anger…
Years ago, my husband and I sought counseling for anger management for our younger son…one of the statements the counselor made was, when a person is angry, their brain chemistry changes and they think differently, not rationally…the chemistry takes over…(have since read about it…)…
Reading about David in this portion of scripture brought this to mind…David became mad, did not consult the Lord as he had previously…and began to seek revenge for what he thought he was entitled to…
“David said to his men, “Each of you strap on your sword!” So they did, and David strapped his on as well.
About four hundred men went up with David, while two hundred stayed with the supplies.
David had just said, “It’s been useless—all my watching over this fellow’s property in the wilderness so that nothing of his was missing.
He has paid me back evil for good. May God deal with David, be it ever so severely, if by morning I leave alive one male of all who belong to him!””
1Sam.25.13,1Sam.25.21-22
God sent a wise woman, Abigail to appease David as he set out for battle…and David recognized God’s hand in this…
“David said to Abigail, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, who has sent you today to meet me.
May you be blessed for your good judgment and for keeping me from bloodshed this day and from avenging myself with my own hands.
Otherwise, as surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, who has kept me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, not one male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by daybreak.”
When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Praise be to the Lord, who has upheld my cause against Nabal for treating me with contempt. He has kept his servant from doing wrong and has brought Nabal’s wrongdoing down on his own head.”1Sam.25.32,1Sam.25.33,1Sam.25.34,1Sam.25.39a…
We have choices to make about anger…we can let it change us…we can hold back and see how God works…anger can change into bitterness which eats the soul…
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Eph.4.31-32
Thank YOU….
“Whether it's one of those minor daily annoyances or something much bigger, a lot is happening in your brain when you get angry. “When you are angry, your ‘fight-or-flight’ response is activated, and your heart starts to beat faster,” explains Noah Kass, DSW, LCSW. “Simultaneously, the part of your brain responsible for rational thinking—the prefrontal cortex—becomes less active.”verywellmind.com
Tremble and do not sin;when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent.
Ps.4.4
Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake.
Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?
Eccl.5.6
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.
Eph.4.26-27
Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.
On the contrary:“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.”
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
