The wait begins…

 The wait begins…

With these words, the Old Testament is closed and the wait for the Messiah begins…although in reality that wait started in Genesis…mankind needed a  Savior……and we got Him in Jesus…no more waiting…only surrender to His saving power that mankind  has acknowledged through the ages, worldwide…

He desires that none should perish but, seek Him…

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2Pet.3.8-9

“Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.

“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the decrees and laws I gave him at Horeb for all Israel. “

See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”

Mal.4.1-6

Thank YOU….

Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,

Exod.19.5

“And afterward,I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

Even on my servants, both men and women,I will pour out my Spirit in those days.

I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.

And everyone who calls-on the name of the Lord will be saved;for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance,as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.

Joel.2.28-32

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.

1 Cor. 3:10-15

but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

Heb.10.27

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1Pet.2.9

Stewardship….

 Stewardship….

I need to  make sure that the preceding blog does not give the impression that I am of the persuasion of the “name it and claim it” group of people.

I am not…

My AI  came up with this concise summary… which I thought was really well stated.

AI Summary

“The Bible addresses money in various contexts, emphasizing its moral and spiritual implications. Key themes include:

Stewardship
The Bible teaches that money is a tool for stewardship. Believers are encouraged to manage their resources wisely, as seen in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30).

Generosity
Generosity is a recurring theme. Verses like 2 Corinthians 9:7 highlight the importance of giving cheerfully and supporting those in need.

Warnings Against Greed
The Bible warns against the love of money, stating in 1 Timothy 6:10 that it is the root of all kinds of evil. This caution emphasizes prioritizing spiritual wealth over material gain.

Wealth and Spirituality
Jesus taught that one cannot serve both God and money (Matthew 6:24). This underscores the idea that spiritual fulfillment should take precedence over financial pursuits.”

Early in our marriage, we followed a Christian organization led by Larry Burkett…he had multiple books on financial guidelines…my husband’s favorite was Business by the Book, (which eventually he had translated into Mongolian)…many others about budgeting, principles of finance…this group phased into what is now known as Crown Financial…

Other groups, Ron Blue, Dave Ramsey have come along as well.. . Excellent teachings in finances…many to help with corporate finances as well as personal finances…addressing those subtitles in the AI summary…with backing in scripture…and there is a lot of scripture which addresses finances…

When you think that the statistics say 50 percent of marriages, both secular and non secular dissolve due to financial problems, it may well behove us to get a grip on our finances…using God’s principles…

Money, tithes, management….

 Money, tithes and management….

I wish more churches would teach about money management, tithing, estate planning…not just to get more money in the church coffers, but as a way to worship, not rob God of the abundance He bestows on each of us…as a way of faith building and His church building around the world…giving is not for the elite few, or those spiritually gifted in giving, but a blessing that we all can enjoy…

Many, many people do not do estate planning….thinking that they don’t have enough to give or distribute…or worse yet, thinking they would “do it later”…leaving their families in question, estate or Guardianship turmoil…which can create hardship among the heirs…

If you don’t make some sort of plan, there is no plan, lawyers can’t read the mind of a deceased person and much will go to the state where the person may or may not have wanted it to go…

My former neighbor passed away this spring…leaving no will, no trust, having no family… but lots of verbal promises, none of which were followed. She was a Christian and wanted to give , but made no provision…

It is amazing to give while we are alive, but planning for future giving is such a gift as well…it takes a bit of time and thought, working with someone who specializes in estate planning…there are so many organizations, Christian and non Christian, who will help make a plan…

don’t be accused of Robbing God….

“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.“

But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’

“In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.

Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.

Mal.3.8-10

“What does the Bible say about tithes and offering?

When tithing is mentioned in a sermon, many church members will eyeball the pastor suspiciously. Others may moan in despair thinking that the church is just wanting to guilt them into giving. But what is tithing? What does the Bible say about it?

Christian quotes about tithes

“God has given us two hands, one to receive with and the other to give with.” Billy Graham

“Giving isn’t so much a matter of what you have as much as it is a matter of who has you. Your giving reveals who has your heart.”

“Giving in a regular, disciplined, generous way-up to and beyond the tithe-is simply good sense in view of the promises of God.” John Piper

“Tithing isn’t really giving – It’s returning.””

Praying for leadership…

 Prayer for leadership….

As we have recently seen and not so recent seen ….people in leadership are targets for evil…Malachi 2 speakers of the cursings written way back in Deuteronomy….but, this one is especially written to the priests….a messenger of the Lord Almighty….whom we seek instruction….

This may have been written in Old Testament times but it still stands true today…

In response, we as the congregations need to uphold our leaders in prayer…just as Paul and Peter requested in their writings…

The need is still so great …the same evil, choices still plague us…maybe a new title, revamped …but the same…

Thank YOU ….

“And now, you priests, this warning is for you. If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honor my name,” says the Lord Almighty, “I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honor me.

“For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth.

But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,” says the Lord Almighty. “So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.”

 Mal.2.1-2,  .2.7-29

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Eph.6.18-20

for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.

Phil.1.1

And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.

Col.4.3-4

Brothers and sisters, pray for us.

1Thess.5.25

And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith.

2Thess.3.2

Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.

Heb.13.18

For,“Whoever would love lifeand see good daysmust keep their tongue from eviland their lips from deceitful speech. They must turn from evil and do good;they must seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteousand his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

1Pet.3.10-12

Deuteronomy 28, has dire consequences….a partial list…none of it good….

“However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. The Lord will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the Lord your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. Because you did not serve the Lord your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the Lord sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you. Then the Lord will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart.”

Energy…

Energy…

Cancer takes a lot of energy…

Just the word in people’s mouths when talking about you…or a loved one zaps your energy level…then you get busy finding out everything these people are talking about…a whole new language…

Do they really mean me?

What are the next steps?

Whom do I see next?

What tests?

What medications?

What treatments or are there any?

What about family?

What about estate planning(key) it needs to done, tweaked so less confusion later?

Where is God in all of this?

Where am I in all this?

When we first heard that 6 letter word with my husband’s terminal diagnosis, shock kicked in…”this couldn’t be true, not us! That happens to others “…

“what do we do now?” Reverberated in our minds, ears and souls…

He was given 12-18 months, he got 5…we focused on a plan of action and the sooner the better as we didn’t know how long he would be able to function, both mentally and physically…(his physical part slowly deteriorated, mentally function was to the very end)….

He started radiation and chemotherapy as soon as possible…we met with lawyers, doctors of all kinds…and went forward…there was no turning back the clock…

People prayed, we prayed…people gave advice that we sifted through, we maintained friendships, we maintained family, the most important part…we maintained church attendance for as long as possible, fellowship…we read the Word…

Then, to get a cancer diagnosis 12 years later  was another blow…our family went through the same emotions…and asked the same questions, had the same list…did the same things…

Moses went on the mountain to God and never returned…

Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years. Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

Gen.35.28-29

By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.

By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones.

Heb.11.21-22

The book of 1 Chronicles expands on the end of David’s life: “David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. He ruled over Israel forty years—seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king” (1 Chronicles 29:26–28).

Before he died, King David gave a charge to Solomon, telling his son to “acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9). Then David left Solomon with detailed instructions for building the temple in Jerusalem, organizing its priests and Levites, and finishing all the work needing to be done in the Lord’s house of worship (verses 11–19).got questions.org…

Jesus…

It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Luke.23.44-46

BUT…

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Matt.28.1-10 …

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John.11.25-26

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

John.3.16-18

Standards…

 Standards…

538 BC first exiles return to Jerusalem…

536 temple reconstruction begins…

520 Haggai, Zechariah become prophets…

516 temple completed

458 Ezra comes to Jerusalem …

445 Nehemiah comes to Jerusalem…

430 Malachi becomes a prophet…

Haggai and Zechariah rebuked the people about their failure to rebuild the temple…nearly a hundred years later, Malachi rebukes them for neglect of the temple, false and profane worship…Bible study notes…

God had standards for worship, animals without blemish, ways of worship…coming to Him  with a contrite, repentant heart…not just an outward show , but inward attitude, ready to worship…

The people in Malachi’s time, especially the priests, knew what was expected of them…they were leading the people astray …

What does that have to say for us today…we who have the written Word …we do not have to bring sheep, cattle …we bring ourselves in openness and honesty…in humility,  bowing before the Creator of the universe….asking, seeking, finding…praising…

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

1Pet.1.18-21

Thank YOU…

“A son honors his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honor due me? If I am a master, where is the respect due me?” says the Lord Almighty.

“It is you priests who show contempt for my name.“

But you ask, ‘How have we shown contempt for your name?’

“By offering defiled food on my altar.“

But you ask, ‘How have we defiled you?’

“By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible.

When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor!

Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?” says the Lord Almighty.

“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,” says the Lord Almighty, “and I will accept no offering from your hands. My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,” says the Lord Almighty.

“But you profane it by saying, ‘The Lord’s table is defiled,’ and, ‘Its food is contemptible.’

And you say, ‘What a burden!’ and you sniff at it contemptuously,” says the Lord Almighty.

“When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?” says the Lord.

“Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,” says the Lord Almighty, “and my name is to be feared among the nations.

Mal.1.6-8,Mal.1.10-14

“Speak to Aaron and his sons and to all the Israelites and say to them: ‘If any of you—whether an Israelite or a foreigner residing in Israel—presents a gift for a burnt offering to the Lord, either to fulfill a vow or as a freewill offering, you must present a male without defect from the cattle, sheep or goats in order that it may be accepted on your behalf.

Do not bring anything with a defect, because it will not be accepted on your behalf.

When anyone brings from the herd or flock a fellowship offering to the Lord to fulfill a special vow or as a freewill offering, it must be without defect or blemish to be acceptable.

Do not offer to the Lord the blind, the injured or the maimed, or anything with warts or festering or running sores.

Do not place any of these on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord.

Even though…

 Even though….

Not all of us live a charmed life…a life that nothing goes wrong…everything is always pleasant, always have food, everything is good, no problems, no weariness, no bad events…etc…what dream!

No, most of us live in a world where sin abounds, bad things happen, times of draught of the soul and body…times of discouragements, times we wonder if we can take the next step…but we do…and we know that generations before us have faced similar battles, days of testings, trails and famines of the soul and bodies…

It was the “even thoughs” of life…help us to stand firm in the Lord…

Thank YOU…

Habakkuk ended his writings with ….

“Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines,

though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,

though there are no sheep in the pen-and no cattle in the stalls,

yet I will rejoice in the Lord,

I will be joyful in God my Savior.

The Sovereign Lord is my strength;he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,he enables me to tread on the heights.

For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.”

Hab.3.17,Hab.3.18,Hab.3.19

Job said something similar…

 “and said:“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,and naked I will depart.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;may the name of the Lord be praised.”

In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.”

Job.1.21,Job.1.22

Moses said of Asher…

Blessed are you, Israel!Who is like you,a people saved by the Lord?He is your shield and helperand your glorious sword.Your enemies will cower before you,and you will tread on their heights.”

Deut.33.29

David said….

“As for God, his way is perfect:

The Lord’s word is flawless;

he shields all who take refuge in him.

For who is God besides the Lord?

And who is the Rock except our God?

It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer;he causes me to stand on the heights.”

Ps.18.30-33

Jesus prayed…

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled. “I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.””

John.17.3,John.17.4,John.17.5,John.17.6,John.17.7,John.17.8,John.17.9,John.17.10,John.17.12,John.17.13,John.17.14,John.17.15,John.17.17-26

Paul said…

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Let your gentleness be evident to all.

The Lord is near.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Phil.4.4-7

Watchtower….

 Watchtower….

Most years some of our family goes to a corn maze…plus, a pumpkin patch, when it is  fall harvest time…one year, we even got to fly over the valley in a Mission Aviation Plane, observing the mazes below us as we made a big loop circling corn patches and pastures filled with ripened corn, grain and a multitude of crops…

One commonality with the corn mazes was a tower placed somewhere in the corn maze…a place to climb to get your bearing in the maze, a place to find out how to get out of the maze or just gaze around…a “watchtower “….

Watchtowers are mentioned several times in the Bible…usually there were watchtowers built into the city walls for observation of activities, see an enemy approaching…but other watchtowers were built in the fields where the crops were planted…a watchman could watch his crops, watch if an enemy approached as well…it was a place of safety…or alarm….

As a parent, I remember when my toddlers would  run and grab my or my husband’s legs when we were in a new or different situation…we were their tower or safe place…or ask to ride on my husband’s shoulders so they could see new vistas instead of everyone’s legs…they felt safe on their “tower”….

Habakkuk wanted to see or hear  what

God had to say to him…he watched and wanted to listen to the answers that he asked…he waited …

Other times, we are the watchman for others or ourselves …a protective tower……God is our protection , as very strong tower or protection…refuge…

In Jesus we have the strongest tower…watchman…

Thank YOU…

I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts;I will look to see what he will say to me,and what answer I am to give to this complaint.

Hab.2.1

For you have been my refuge,a strong tower against the foe.

Ps.61.3

I will listen to what God the Lord says;he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants—but let them not turn to folly.

Ps.85.8

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;the righteous run to it and are safe.

Prov.18.10

And the lookout shouted,“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower;every night I stay at my post.

Isa.21.8

This is what the Lord says:“Stand at the crossroads and look;ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it,and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ I appointed watchmen over you and said,‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’But you said, ‘We will not listen.’

Jer.6.16-17

“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.

Ezek.3.17

Blessed be the name of the LORD…

Folly over the ages….

 Folly over the ages…

As I finish Nehemiah, I was struck by the events which happened in his absence….just as Moses on the mountain, coming down to see that the Israelites had built a golden calf for their worship, turning their back on God in a short amount of time…the people of Jerusalem turned their backs as well..following after things…disobeying after a great victory of building the wall and the reading of the Word by Ezra…

Fast forward to Jesus’ day…with him ransacking the temple to make the point of no sellers in the temple courts…

All three men, Moses, Nehemiah, and Jesus wanted so much that the people follow God, not economics or other gods…purity in worship of the Creator …the God of the universe who cares so much, loved them and us …went  his Son for our salvation…

How quickly we fall into old habits…forgetting the true gifts, reaching for the temporal …

Thank YOU…

Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah, and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and olive oil prescribed for the Levites, musicians and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests. But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God.

I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah’s household goods out of the room. I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense.

I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.

So I rebuked the officials and asked them, “Why is the house of God neglected?” Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts. In those days I saw people in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. People from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this wicked thing you are doing—desecrating the Sabbath day? Didn’t your ancestors do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity on us and on this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath.” Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women. Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?”

Remember them, my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.

Neh.13.4-11,Neh.13.15-18,Neh.13.26,Neh.13.27,Neh.13.29

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

“I have seen these people,” the Lord said to Moses, “and they are a stiff-necked people. Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”

But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. “Lord,” he said, “why should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

He said to Aaron, “What did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?”

“Do not be angry, my lord,” Aaron answered. “You know how prone these people are to evil. They said to me, ‘Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.’ So I told them, ‘Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.’ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!”

Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies.

Exod.32.7-11,Exod.32.19-25

On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’”

Mark.11.15-17

As a dog returns to its vomit,so fools repeat their folly.

Concerts….

 Concerts….

I have attended concerts, music shows, church music for as long as I can remember….we had college productions, community concerts, western music, military bands, Christian artists, music shows in the big casinos in Nevada, parades, church music concerts/choirs, music recitals, plus high school and college choirs…music , music, music…it can sooth the soul, cause you to rejoice, reflect and tear you down as well….

Nehemiah 12 talks about the assembly singers, instruments for the dedication of the Wall of Jerusalem…

At the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem, the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals, harps and lyres.

The musicians also were brought together from the region around Jerusalem—from the villages of the Netophathites, from Beth Gilgal, and from the area of Geba and Azmaveth, for the musicians had built villages for themselves around Jerusalem. When the priests and Levites had purified themselves ceremonially, they purified the people, the gates and the wall. I had the leaders of Judah go up on top of the wall.

I also assigned two large choirs to give thanks. One was to proceed on top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate. and his associates—Shemaiah, Azarel, Milalai, Gilalai, Maai, Nethanel, Judah and Hanani—with musical instruments prescribed by David the man of God.

Ezra the teacher of the Law led the procession. At the Fountain Gate they continued directly up the steps of the City of David on the ascent to the wall and passed above the site of David’s palace to the Water Gate on the east.

The second choir proceeded in the opposite direction. I followed them on top of the wall, together with half the people—past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall, over the Gate of Ephraim, the Jeshanah Gate, the Fish Gate, the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Sheep Gate.

At the Gate of the Guard they stopped. The two choirs that gave thanks then took their places in the house of God; so did I, together with half the officials, and also Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malkijah, Elam and Ezer.

The choirs sang under the direction of Jezrahiah. And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced.

The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.

For long ago, in the days of David and Asaph, there had been directors for the musicians and for the songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.

Neh.12.27-31,Neh.12.36-40,Neh.12.42,Neh.12.43,Neh.12.46

Can you imagine the amount of rejoicing after a grueling time of building the wall? 52 days…then the amount of rejoicing…

God alone gave them strength to start, continue and finish…with Nehemiah directing, then the reading of God’s Word by Ezra…

What do we have to rejoice with now, how do we do it? Music is still part of our worship whether in church, driving down the road..

Just going outside in the early morning or evening…the birds, crickets, frogs give voice to praise…

Thank YOU….

Fitting and orderly way..

 Fitting and orderly way…

But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.

1Cor.14.40

The Subtitle of the last three chapter of Nehemiah is,”Nehemiah establishes Policies “…

Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem. The rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten of them to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns. The people commended all who volunteered to live in Jerusalem. These are the provincial leaders who settled in Jerusalem (now some Israelites, priests, Levites, temple servants and descendants of Solomon’s servants lived in the towns of Judah, each on their own property in the various towns, The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the towns of Judah, each on their ancestral property. The temple servants lived on the hill of Ophel, and Ziha and Gishpa were in charge of them. As for the villages with their fields, some of the people of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba and its surrounding settlements, in Dibon and its settlements, in Jekabzeel and its villages, Some of the divisions of the Levites of Judah settled in Benjamin.

Neh.11.1-3,Neh.11.20,Neh.11.21,Neh.11.25,Neh.11.36

Nehemiah showed through his book that he was thoughtful, always planning, strategic….and indeed a follower of God…his quick, “Help me” prayers are found throughout the book…and because God promises wisdom if we seek Him, Nehemiah was wise in his plans…

What lessons we can draw from that single plan…ask for wisdom in everything…

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.

Ps.111.10

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life.

If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you;if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer.

Prov.9.10-12

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Prayer and praise times…

 Prayer and praise times…

Years ago, we moved to another town for a period of time. My husband went back to school, a seminary to get another Masters…take care of his mother in her last years,  find out where God really wanted us, get some direction with our children, etc….

We became involved in a church while there which was so good, especially for me…the women’s Bible study was large, 150-175 women attending, broken down into small groups of 10-12 studying  various topics or Bible books. In the spring we had a prayer and praise time, the best day of the study as one by one women shared how their year went…tears and laughter abounded…

Another church I attended after the passing of my husband had a special time at Easter…prayer stations…taking time at each station to pray for specific topics…

I went to a women’s retreat where we did the stations as well…

A friend recently attended and spoke at a women’s retreat and they did the stations as well… she graciously shared their station topics….(these can be suited for each  group or event)….adding journals or handouts would be nice…

Station 1- Salvation, praying for those who need salvation…

Station 2-praying for our students and schools…

Station 3-praying for prodigals…

Station 4-God’s Word…

Station 5-Prayer for facility using…

Station 6-Pray a psalm out loud…

Station 7- Pray for our pastors…

Station 8-Pray for the persecuted church…

Station 9-Take time to listen, contemplate….

A few other ideas….

I thought of Ezra reading the word in the hearing of the people in the book of Nehemiah…it was a super special time….God spoke to those people through the Word…and they responded …this big congregation wasn’t an everyday event, it was special…

He read it aloud from daybreak till noon as he faced the square before the Water Gate in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively to the Book of the Law. Ezra praised the Lord, the great God; and all the people lifted their hands and responded, “Amen! Amen!” Then they bowed down and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read. Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” The Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be still, for this is a holy day. Do not grieve.” Then all the people went away to eat and drink, to send portions of food and to celebrate with great joy, because they now understood the words that had been made known to them. Day after day, from the first day to the last, Ezra read from the Book of the Law of God. They celebrated the festival for seven days, and on the eighth day, in accordance with the regulation, there was an assembly.

Integrity…God fearing….

Integrity…God fearing…..

I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.

Nehemiah 7:2

Integrity-implies trustworthiness and incorruptibility to a degree that one is incapable of being false to a  trust, responsibility or pledge…Merriam-Webster

How many people do you know that you could say that definition defines their life? Does it define your life ?  Does it define my life?

When we are writing our wills and giving over the care of our children’s guardianship, we want this type of people…when we are doling out our worldly goods, we want that characteristic…

When we choose a church fellowship,we want that characteristic…when we choose friends, we want that characteristic…when we choose a spouse, we want that characteristic…when we choose a political party, we want that characteristic….someone we can trust…

Sometimes they are hard to come by…

Nehemiah found such a person in his brother…he trusted him as a gatekeeper to keep the citizens of the city safe…a huge responsibility…a huge trust…

God speaks of integrity in the book of Job…

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil. And he still maintains his integrity, though you incited me against him to ruin him without any reason.”

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

Job.2.3,9

Psalms…

May integrity and uprightness protect me,because my hope, Lord, is in you.

Ps.25.21

Proverbs…

Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

Prov.13.6

Matthew and Mark…

They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are.

Matt.22.16

Titus….

Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

In everything set them an example by doing what is good.

In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.

Titus.2.6-8

Integrity, a trait that behooves us to cultivate…from childhood on…

Thank you….

martyrdom….….

martyrdom

: the suffering of death on account of adherence to a cause and especially to one's religious faith….Merriam Webster…

I remember the assassination of  JFK, his brother, Martin Luther King, the attempted assassination of George Wallace, the skyscrapers tumbling to the ground of 911…all a type of martyrdom…a difference in beliefs…a violent end…and they happen all over the world…and now another, a young man someone wanted out of the picture as well…

Daniel almost met this end during his time ….men, greedy for power wanted Daniel’s place…wanted Daniel out of picture for their gain ….they, too, used Daniel’s devotion to God as a weapon…the funny thing is, God is not mocked nor does He give his power to another…as they found out…

At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.

Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God.”

Dan 6:4-5

God’s justice may not come immediately for He is slow to anger…it may not come when we expect it, but it comes regardless…as Daniel’s enemies found out…” At the king’s command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.”

Dan.6.24

“I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel.“For he is the living God and in he endures forever;his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end. He rescues and he saves;he performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

Dan.6.26-27

David wrote…

How long will the enemy mock you, God?

Will the foe revile your name forever?

But God is my King from long ago;he brings salvation on the earth.

It was you who split open the sea by your power;you broke the heads of the monster in the waters.

It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.

It was you who opened up springs and streams;you dried up the ever-flowing rivers.

The day is yours, and yours also the night;you established the sun and moon.

It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;you made both summer and winter.

Remember how the enemy has mocked you, Lord, how foolish people have reviled your name.

Do not let the oppressed retreat in disgrace;may the poor and needy praise your name.

Rise up, O God, and defend your cause;remember how fools mock you all day long.

Do not ignore the clamor of your adversaries, the uproar of your enemies, which rises continually.

Ps.74.10,Ps.74.12-18,Ps.74.21-23

Nahum wrote…

The Lord is slow to anger but great in power;the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.

His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet.

He rebukes the sea and dries it up;he makes all the rivers run dry.

Bashan and Carmel wither and the blossoms of Lebanon fade. The mountains quake before him and the hills melt away.

The earth trembles at his presence, the world and all who live in it. Who can withstand his indignation?

Who can endure his fierce anger?

His wrath is poured out like fire;the rocks are shattered before him. Whatever they plot against the Lord he will bring to an end;trouble will not come a second time.

Nah.1.3-6,Nah.1.9

Thank YOU…

This Young man who died on the Eve of 911, may he not have died in vain…uphold this young widow and their children in the comfort of Your almighty hand…may You be to her a husband as You promise…May she seek your comfort, compassion…send those whom she needs to surround her in this time of great grief….build her up…encourage, bear her burdens…thank YOU…

Wasps and yellow jackets….

 wasps and yellow jackets ….

One of my sons came over to my house earlier this summer and tore down papery nests adhered to various spots on my house…some hidden and some in plain sight…he sprayed them and the wasps swarmed out and quickly died… it seemed like for every one killed, two others appeared…this year seems to be a healthy year for their appearance in my yard…I have three kinds of traps and have emptied those, to be refilled/rescented again…they seem to enjoy my fruit trees a lot….an annoyance to be sure..

Nehemiah had annoyances as well….Sanballat, Tobaih, Geshem

and other enemies…those who did want him to succeed…those who were a bother, willing to “Sting” when they could…

First, they became angry , incensed, insulting, trying to stir up trouble …they didn’t want their power to be given overly to “those Jews”. Then they tried to take Nehemiah away from his work…by planning a meeting away from the city of Jerusalem…

Thirdly, they hired prophets to intimidate Nehemiah…

Nehemiah, as usual sent up his “Bullet prayers” each time…”strengthen my hands”…and God did…

The last we hear of these men is in the sixth chapter of Nehemiah…the wall is built…

As a reminder, as I write this, my dog has interrupted no less than ten times…wanting my attention….usually he is sound asleep now, paying no attention whatsoever to what I am doing…not today though…strengthen my words….

Thank YOU…

Now when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates), Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to do me harm. And I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” And they sent to me four times in this way, and I answered them in the same manner. In the same way Sanballat for the fifth time sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king. And you have also set up prophets to proclaim concerning you in Jerusalem, ‘There is a king in Judah.’ And now the king will hear of these reports. So now come and let us take counsel together.” For they all wanted to frighten us, thinking, “Their hands will drop from the work, and it will not be done.”

But now, O God, strengthen my hands. Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, according to these things that they did, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who wanted to make me afraid.

Also they spoke of his good deeds in my presence and reported my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.

The poor among us…

The poor among us…

As if Nehemiah didn’t have enough to do when getting the wall built with all these people in Jerusalem, he has to deal with greed, complaints about unfair treatment of the poor….this must have been a new revelation…as he worked with the king , not with the poor…then seeing mistreatment among his fellow Jewish  brothers….

Almost every book of the Bible has some reference to the poor…

Exodus speaks directly to the problems the Nehemiah as finding…

You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child. If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. If ever you take your neighbor's cloak in pledge, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

Facing the opposition…

 Facing the opposition….

I have known struggling addicts of several kinds of addictions…alcohol, drugs, food, porn, etc….they know what to do and do it…but, it is not without a battle….the rewards are great in following what they know is right…but it is not easy…there seems to always be someone who holds out a carrot of temptation…”just this once won’t matter” or “they’ll never know”…

Whenever I read this chapter 4 of Nehemiah, it reminds me of this…the enemy does not want us to succeed in God’s calling.  He will taunt us, ridicule, tear down, temp, call names , etc, etc….he doesn’t want to give up “his” territory in our lives…

I so appreciate Nehemiah through this time…

Hear, O our God, for we are despised. Turn back their taunt on their own heads and give them up to be plundered in a land where they are captives. Do not cover their guilt, and let not their sin be blotted out from your sight, for they have provoked you to anger in the presence of the builders.

And we prayed to our God and set a guard as a protection against them day and night.

And I looked and arose and said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “Do not be afraid of them.

Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes.”

In the place where you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us.”Neh.4.4,Neh.4.5,Neh.4.9,Neh.4.14,Neh.4.20

He kept bringing the people back to God’s calling…

David…

O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge;save me from all my pursuers and deliver me, lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.

Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,and may you establish the righteous—you who test the minds and hearts,O righteous God!

My shield is with God,who saves the upright in heart.

Ps.7.1,Ps.7.2,Ps.7.9,Ps.7.10

Isaiah….

to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit;that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he may be glorified.Isa.61.3

Paul…

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.

To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,

Eph.6.10-18

The enemy hasn’t given up over the ages, We have the Same God who fights for us…stands behind, with and before us…

Gates…

Gates….

I have always enjoyed Nehemiah…I like how he narrated this piece of his life…the gates and who did what…on he surface it seems like a daily diary…but, he prayed long and hard, short and sweet, about what he did and what to say…seeking wisdom along the way…how to speak to the king, how to build, how to speak to the people, how to organize…everything…just a reminder that God is there all the time, a word away…and that he gives answers, wisdom in whatever we ask or seek..

In chapter 3 he talks about 10 gates and who did what…

He starts with the Sheep Gate…the priests rebuilt this one…a reminder that our spiritual leaders take the initiative to lead the way…

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Heb.2.17,Heb.4.14-16

Not only was it the Priest’s gate to build…Jesus was the Lamb of God…the priests  brought the sacrificial lambs through this gate to the temple…

And not only that…Jesus called himself the door of the sheep and the good shepherd…

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John.1.29

So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

John.10.7,John.10.8,John.10.11

And much more…So much symbolism…love it…

Okay , let’s go to the Fish gate…

The fish market was apparently close to this gate, hence fish gate…one commentator wrote that the merchants from Tyre, the Sea of Galilee, and other fishing areas came through gate to sell their fish…so fresh water and salt water fish…there are 18 types of native fish in the Sea of Galilee…tilapia being the best known…

Some of Jesus’ disciples were fishermen…he called them to be fishers of men…

While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

Matt.4.18-22

Jesus fed multitudes with a few fish…

He told the disciples to cast for fish and they got so many , they could hardly bring them in..,

He fed the disciples fish …

It is really  interesting about the gates and lots is written about them…

The chapter starts and ends with the Sheep gate…our priority…worship, the Shepherd,  the Lamb of God…

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Rev.1.8

I spy with my little eye…

I spy with my little eye…

We used to play the game, “I spy with my little eye” especially when we were traveling…each person taking turns to find something and then the other would guess wheat they were spying…

Another “ spy” event is one which I watch sporadically, is a restaurant spy show…a well known restauranteur is requested to spy out various restaurants with the goal of helping the owners upgrade in their service, menus, cleaning…in general just help them…he goes in at night looking at everything, has cameras placed to view via remote to see the everyday workings to find out the information he needs to help…

In Nehemiah 2 , Nehemiah does exactly the same thing…he spies out brokenness of Jerusalem by night to see how he is to help…

So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days. Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode. I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire. Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but there was no room for the animal that was under me to pass. Then I went up in the night by the valley and inspected the wall, and I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, and I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, and the rest who were to do the work.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned. Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer suffer derision.” And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, “Let us rise up and build.” So they strengthened their hands for the good work. But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they jeered at us and despised us and said, “What is this thing that you are doing? Are you rebelling against the king?” Then I replied to them, “The God of heaven will make us prosper, and we his servants will arise and build, but you have no portion or right or claim in Jerusalem.”

Neh.2.11-20

Just as in the tv series, the goal is to build up…not to tear down…

Nehemiah says “the God of heaven will make us prosper “…God sent him to do a work…and he began by evaluating the problem to  come  up with a solution and go forward…he knew before he got there that the gates needed replacing, so he gathered those supplies along the way, with the letters from the king…

Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Prov.16.3

For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?

Luke.14.28

Nehemiah had built his life on the Rock…God his foundation…
